I am attending my community college for 2 years. In my first semester, I took 4 courses and I got D grade from one of them. I had a medical issue so I went back to my home country eariler than the end of the semester to get medical treatment and have a rest with my family. I was able to take finals except the one course before I left to my country. The course that didn't allow me to take final earlier was put 'Incompleted' grade and finally it changed to D grade after I came back to school.

The advisor suggested me to repeat the course. I didn't know about the withdrawal process since it was my first semester in america, and the advisor didn't mention it either. The adivsor said GPA will not calculate D grade once I get higher grade from repeated course. So I repeated the course last semester and finished with A grade. I thought the D grade will not bother me. But I found that many schools including USC, calculate GPA for admission from each grade earned in the repeated course.

I went to advisor to ask for withdrawal of the D graded course today and she said there is no way to withdraw 2 year-old grade. I showed her my all medical records and doctor's note, but she said it is too late. She said there is an academic appeal but I am too late for asking withdrawal.

Any advice?
If I appeal to the schools which calculate GPA for admission from each grade earned in the repeated course with strong evidence (medical record and doctor's note) when I apply, will they consider my situation for admission? I doubt they would do because they will get a ton of applications from the whole country.
It is so fraustrating. I feel like I waste 2 years.
I really need advice...

One D should not ruin your chances at transfer, especially since you retook the class.

Simply put a SHORT and CONCISE explanation of the “D” grade and note that you retook the class. Even the explanation you gave here on the forum is too long. Don’t get into any of the info about the advisor giving you bad advise or you not knowing the rules about withdrawing. Own up and move on–you want the adcom reading your app to spend just enough time reading your explanation to realize that the “D” was a short unexpected blip in your time at college (about 10 seconds!). If the rest of your transcript is solid, that should shine through.

The reality is that with or without that “D” grade, your chances of getting into USC and other elite colleges is not guaranteed. People with high GPAs without a “glitch” get turned down all the time!

Be sure to apply to a broad range of match and safety schools along with USC because admissions are quite unpredictable these days.

Transfer is stressful, try not to obsess over something you can not control.

Thank you for advice annikasorrensen

And here is the good news.
My gpa calculation was wrong, so corrected gpa will be 3.72 including 2 Ds. But it is still not reaching the average gpa of USC marshall admission. And I do not have any outstanding extra curricular activities nor SAT/ACT score. If I wait 1 more year for 2012 fall transfer spending the time by earning more credits, participating in some internship programs, and club activities, my gpa would be 3.81 and I will be more competitive applicant.

Or, does USC accept re-apply?
If they do, I will just apply for 2011 fall. And if I will be rejected, I would apply again in 2012 fall after upgrading my works. How do you think? I need adivce.
