I’m very conflicted. It’s the fourth week of class, and last week one of my parents was diagnosed with serious cancer that may not even be treatable. I already struggle with staying motivated to go to class and do work (I have a 3.8 GPA but it doesn’t come easily). I’m taking really hard classes related to my major this semester and I knew it would be rough going in, but I wasn’t expecting the extra emotional stress. It’s beginning to really get to me. I already have one W on my transcript from a class freshman year that I was definitely going to fail, but I’m trying to figure out if I need to drop one of my major electives this semester. I really don’t want to have two Ws on my transcript but I feel completely overwhelmed and I’m already not doing well in the class. It’s nothing that my professor could fix, it’s literally the work load and my lack of confidence in the subject and my life in general right now. Dropping the class obviously won’t solve all of my problems but I just feel like I have too much going on right now and that I won’t be able to keep it up for much longer. Opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated.
@jc1011 I am so sorry to hear about your parent.
You need to take care of yourself, and that includes your mental health.
I would definitely recommend dropping the class. Withdrawals aren’t the end of the world, and if you’re that worried about it, you can always write an addendum to whatever graduate school you’re applying to in the future to explain the situation. I can’t imagine an admissions officer NOT being sympathetic in this situation.
