Wittenberg vs. Miami of Ohio

I am currently deciding between these two schools, Wittenberg University and Miami University in Ohio. They're two completely different schools, one's small the other's large. Without a chance to visit these again, would anyone mind giving me some input on these schools - student body vs. reputation. Thanks!

Congrat's on your acceptances. I am not familiar with Wittenberg, but can tell you that most of the kids that I know at Miami are pleased with it and are having a good experience. In my son's HS (a good public), Miami is popular among the good and very good students that are interested in a public university, but want one that is not enormous. Miami is a bit preppier than OU or OSU, but there is a reasonable diversity and you should be able to find your niche (whatever it may be).

My impression of Miami when I visited was that the student body seems very preppy, but not in a dull way - they seem involved in student life. The campus is beautiful but it's definitely out in the middle of nowhere (though I do remember a small college town nearby, with food and a movie theater.)

Hi!
I go to Wittenberg, but I don't know much about Miami so I might be one-sided! :)

I really enjoy it here, and I know a lot of people that do also. Just make sure you take into account exactly what you're looking for. Like you've said, Witt is small and Miami is pretty large. Each has its positives and negatives.

Here at Witt we're constantly expanding and building, and Witt is ranked pretty high in the top 100 liberal arts colleges in the nation. The student body here is very friendly. Whenever my family visits they usually get lost, and they always tell me that the students they ask for help are very friendly and helpful.

Also, the small class sizes are great. I feel like I really know my professors, and they are constantly reminding us to stop by their offices for help if we need it. They are very interested in our learning, and make every effort to lead to our success.

Plus, the campus is beautiful! ;)

Good luck making your decision. I know it's a tough one, but you'll feel so relieved once you choose! :)

My D is at Miami as an out of state student. Almost all the other schools she applied to were small, because we thought she would do better on a small campus. She ended up at MU because they gave her the best $$. She couldn't be happier. In hindsight, I believe she would have outgrown the smaller schools. As a music major, she has a "small school" within the larger one. But she has the advantage of many, many more course offerings, tons of ECs, and has made bunches of friends from various groups. She has a core of music friends, a core of dorm friends, a core of honors/scholars friends, and cores of a couple groups. There has been tremendous growth in her.

We didn't visit Wittenberg, so I can't offer the flip side.

I visited both Wittenberg and Miami recently and wrote up reports on them:

My assessment on both of them is that education quality is similar, but, as others have noted, scale is a big difference.

The art department at Miami has access to better facilities. Miami is a very good value overall.
