Anyone else admitted for this WMP spring semester program? I don’t think I’m going to do it, doesn’t seem worth it…but has anyone else gotten that?

Found an old thread and bumped it … lots of information. I consider it a definite option, depending on what other options there are …

yeah, i got it but i’m not sure about it yet. i wish they gave us more information.

can i have the link to the old thread?

Hey, I too was admitted to the WMP program. I don’t think I’m doing it, because of the costs (no financial and and FULL tuition costs!) But I would otherwise. Does anyone know if American would accept community college credits if taken the fall before spring term?

any1 wana explain what WMP is…i have no idea…i just got it

http://www.american.edu/washingtonsemester/ here is a link where you can find a lot of information about the program. at the top you can check out what the internship is and some other things.

Basically, it allows you to transition before you start for “real” in the spring. Frankly, it seems a bit murky to me. Its far too expensive once you read in between the lines, I got aid for SPRING term but it took me awhile to realize I had zero aid in the fall when the WMP program would occur. I don’t doubt its a good program, but I think its a bit unfair to ask 18,000 dollars in exchange for feeling as though you’ve been accepted in the fall. I mean, might as well accept it and just take community college classes instead. Not sure, but that’s the take I have on it so far.

The big question I’m sure you have is, “What’s the difference between us and regularly admitted students for the fall?”
I just came back frmo the big WMP informational thing this past Saturday and I have to say that I’m thoroughly impressed. Don’t think that you have less of an opportunity than the fall semester students because that’s not the case. In actuality, WMP have an advantage. We start our internships right away and have crucial internship experience months before the other students due. I received a sample class schedule that would be typical of a WMP student and it’s basically the same as fall semester students. We take the same classes. The only real difference is that we live on Tenley campus for the fall semester and then once spring semester rolls around, us WMP students get the option to move to main campus or stay on Tenley. Oddly enough, most students opt to stay on Tenley. This is for a few reasons. One being that Tenley is closer to the metro than main campus and moving around is way more convenient. Another is that You get a lot closer to your Tenley friends than you think. They all opt to stay because they love their Tenley classmates. Another point I forgot to mention about the WMP program itself is that our professors actually take us out into the city to talk to different people and visit different places. For example, one day we might meet with a Congressman and the next it might be a political activist from the Green party or something like that. The regular fall semester students don’t get to do that. Honestly, I was convinced to go ahead with it after I attended the information session on Saturday. I was blown away by what WMP offered me and I felt like I had a greater opportunity than the fall kids. The dean of the WMP program straight up asked us in his first statement, “How many of you were disappointed when you opened your letters and it read, ‘Unfortunately you were not accepted for fall semester at AU.’?” And nearly everyone raised their hands. After that, he proceeded to impress us more and more with what this program offers. Honestly, the only real difference negatively is that we’re on Tenley campus for one semester which isn’t even that bad. And if you think about it, in a few months you might be on main campus anyway. I already put down my deposit and plan to attend this fall. it’s a great opportunity. Take it from someone who was impressed first hand only a few days ago. I’d love to see you guys there!

@ silverscreen They admitted that they don’t offer student aid for WMP which the Dean admitted that he’s been trying to fight for. But financials aren’t up to him for economic reasons. They do offer nice student loan plans or something though. I’m not too knowledgeable on all the payment stuff, but I know they compensate for the financial aid loss in some way. Like I said in my last post, the benefits that really come out of it are worthwhile. The real key is the contacts you make being able to go through your internships. This one girl made a contact through her professor who then gave her a contact in the white house who then gave her a contact through the pentagon and now she’s graduating in 3 weeks. I was shocked. She admitted that she had zero work ethic and hadn’t even held a job before going to college, but now she’s as successful as can be. I remember there was this gorgeous girl who was one of the WMP alumni and she didn’t look like the government type to me; which she wasn’t. She said that she wanted an internship that she could wear jeans and flip flops to everyday and she found one and is successful coming out of the WMP program. She literally just came out of the WMP program in the fall this past year. She’s a freshman who just started her fall term not too long ago; which makes sense because it’s April now of the spring semester. The WMP offers 2000+ different internships. I really can’t tell you guys enough lucky you are to have been admitted to the WMP. I know I seem like a crazed fanatic over it, but going there and meeting all these kids really opened my eyes. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you want to do. WMP is meant to be the ultimate flexibility. I hope you guys can take something away from what I’m telling you. I’m straight up a normal 18 year old Korean kid from Jersey who was ready to kick this garbage to the curb when I heard about it. Seriously, if you guys have more questions, feel free to pm me or something. I’ll let you in on anything I can.

@silverscreen: Yeah they will. The whole point of the WMP program is to keep you on track with the regularly admitted fall kids. You take courses that will accumulate to 15 credits which is what you need to follow up in the spring. The fall kids are taking 15 credit courses too. You can take community college courses too as long as you have the proper number of credits to transfer over in spring. Think about it this way, you’re still accepted for the spring semester, so you have to transfer over when the time comes. It’s just a matter of you having credits or not. I mean, you don’t have to take 15 credits worth of whatever, but that just means you might have to work harder during the summer maybe or whenever you have free time to make up for those credits. But then again, you’ll only have to make up the credits in crunch like that if you wanna graduate on time. You could just not graduate on time if you didn’t care. lol Idk what you’d wanna do, but basically what I’m saying is, Yeah, they’ll transfer.
