I was talking to one of my friends who I thought was waitlisted, but he said he was deferred. shrug I know he sent along an updated resume with a cover letter explaining his C and why he would be a strong candidate for UMD. (I know because I proofed it. ;))

I am a currently a senior at University of Maryland and I just want to congratulate you guys for getting accepted for the fall semester. I strongly encourage you guys to seriously consider attending UMD. In my 4 years here, the school has been rapidly rising in terms of its academic reputation. Also, there are very few schools in the country that is able to offer the type of basketball/football prowess that Maryland has to offer. A Duke-Maryland game at 3rd-row center court of Comcast Center is UNBELIEVABLE...once in a lifetime experience.

More importantly though, Maryland career center really helps its students in terms of finding an internship/full time job. The abundent resources really help students get the internships to build his/her resume and eventually find a full-time job. I've had 4 internships and now several full-time offers on the table, and EVERY single one of my internship/full-time offers were from campus interviews. The companies, especially around DC/NoVa area, have very high regard for Maryland, especially its Comp Sci/Engineering/Business depts.

The campus is beautiful and the possibilities here are endless. Call this a recruiting pitch if you want. But after experiencing through college the past 4 years at UMD, I highly recommend you guys to seriously consider MD not just as a backup school, but a home for your next 4/5/6 years. BTW I came out of high school w/ a 3.6 GPA/1430 SAT and acceptance from Illinois and Michigan engineering. I haven't regretted my decision one bit and have realized that Maryland students are just as bright as the ones from other top pub. universities.

Hope this post helped you guys understand Maryland a little better as well as making a decision for your college. Now that you guys are in, enjoy the rest of your HS and get ready for college! It is truly the best times of your lives. Go Terps!

Hey, I got the email a few days ago, but didn't check online until I read here we can check to see if we got into other programs. I got in and am invited to Gemstone, Honors and Honors Humanities. I'm pretty excited about it, but I've also got good offers from other schools. We'll see.

I know that a lot of Gemstone kids eventually drop it and stay with the honors. Honors kids are required to take a certain number of classes within their major. The honors classes are usually harder, but the professors teaching are excellent and at the end they usually give the students As and Bs. The classroom setting is smaller for honors classes, and more interaction between the professor and students. Scholars is a two year program that makes you take 1 credit classes every semester. It was really annoying and many kids drop out of it after a year because it was not worth the effort. At the end of two years you get a little certificate that looks like it was made by a 5 year old kid. I don't even bother putting scholars on my resume anymore because no one really cares about it. That was 4 years ago though, and at the time Scholars was still relatively new.

I, to my complete surprise, got accepted :D Before applying I thought I had slim to no chance at all.. and after hearing about all these people getting deferred or waitlisted, I still have no idea how I got in lol

I'm from out of state and my stats are good but nothing amazing.. must have been the essay maybe?

supafly003...Same with my d. She's still amazed she even got in for spring...(waitlisted for fall). Her essay was very well written... so she thinks that plus very good ec's...not tons, but several she's been dedicated to for many years, is what put her in. It seems her app. was examined thoroughly...because she did not get in for high test scores, that's for sure.

ok i have an international address so i still havent gotten a letter by post
online it is saying 'decision has yet not been made' or watever and no email....
i think i have pretty decent, around their avg stats for maryland
i applied by dec 1

My son has applied to MD & Georgetown business schools ONLY! His SAT score was 1270. I am now getting nervous. Could we not be DC bound? We live overseas. His sister is at Georgetown. What will we do if neither accept him. I'm thinking about this nearly round the clock and he's so COOL about it all. There is NOTHING for him to do here in Suriname. I will gladly take an admission to the University but not the business school, because I want him to consider engineering as well.

We called and tried to get Maryland to give us a decision so that we could attend the April 1 Open House while we are in the states. The admissions office said that the decision won't be out until after April 1. BUT BUT we got Georgetown's acceptance today! YES!!!

and just a note to everyone- when you write the scholars thing, did you apply? because i thought i was in too, because it said wiht my decesion, however there's an application process for it that was due march 15th

when i got my decision, it said that i was accepted to scholars as well. Then i went to the open house and they told us that we were guarenteed a spot in the scholars program, but we had to apply for the theme we wanted by March 15th. So you have to like write an essay saying why you are a good applicant for the one you want. Otherwise they will just put you in one that doesnt fill up.

S got something different - with his acceptance letter said he got into Scholars. Then a bit later he got 2 letters on the same day: one indicating that he had gotten into "Departmental Honors" and the 2nd indicating that he got an 8K renewable scholarship if he maintains a 3.2 average.

Does anyone know how/if "Departmental Honors" differs from regular Honors. Does he still get Honors Housing, etc?

Also, how hard is it to maintain a 3.2 for a computer engineering major?
