common app personal statement has word limit (250-500 words) but my essay is 726 words / 4358 characters (with space) !@#!@

some people say it is fine as long as the essay is under 6000 characters but I really really want to make sure if this is the case... I'm sure many people share my problem with word limit..!@#!@

Do a careful, ruthless editing for one hour or so, and if you're still left with a lot of words over the word limit that probably means the extra words are essential to your essay and should remain.

It took me 2 hrs to edit my 800 word essay into 300 words.
It was painful and I dont really like my 300 word essay (actually, i hate it - I might write another) but oh well it's life.

in my case it's usually the opposite, i feel that my essay reads much better after editing.

but trust me i never did an 800 to 300 editing, must be a world record or something lol!

still editing can bring surprising results. for example, i wrote this essay of about 700 words which had 6 paragraphs; then when editing, i found that i could remove my 3rd and 4th paragraphs (both were around a 100 words each), not edit the rest of the essay at all and it still made perfect sense. talk about ockham's razor!

Admission counselor from Trinity told us that he personally will read max 2 page essay. He won’t even look at 3 page essay. And the essay which is 726 words is one page and eight or nine lines (if I calculated correctly) so they will read it :)
BUT from my personal experience admission people like small (500 words) essay and I know that it very hard to express yourself in such a small space. but it is a part of the challenging process which is called the college admission. Laconic essay is a big plus, because it shows that you can develop your idea in a little space, and it is another skill besides logic and etc that colleges like.

I knew I had to cut it down but I was too lazy and needed some kind of spark to force me to edit.
I woke up this morning, checked my post, and immediately started to edit my essay.

I worked for an hour and was able to cut down to 586 words. But I'm afraid if I cut down more, my essay would lose its message. Would it be okay?

Thank you guys so much, sybbie719, TheOneCurlyFry, NBZ, NoFX, and DOLO2 !!!

Remember that they set word limits knowing that many will go over it. I'm sure they'd be fine if it were 200 or so words over--which is why they set the limit to 300. If they simply said "500 words," then you'd have people submitting 700-word essays. :P
