Work Expectation for Students

I received an email about a week ago that I was admitted to Vanderbilt university with a huge financial aid package. However, the email just mentioned the total financial aid amount, and did not break it down to grants and work expectation. I am curious to know, how much do international students (and US students), get as work expectation? And what are the kinds of jobs done by students? I am an international student, btw

Yeah, I’m pretty curious about this as well. I’m a US student and I got a pretty sizable Financial Aid offer. Anyone know how the breakdown works? I highly doubt it’s all free money… That would be amazing if it was though (:

I can’t speak for international students, but as a US student, I can say that it’s almost all grant money, which is completely free to you.

I believe the standard amount of money that comes from work-study program is $2000 ($1000/semester). Totally manageable; it boils down to like 5 -7 hours a week, depending on your position’s pay. You can choose to accept or decline that award. Even if you decline, you can still pick up a job on your own of course, but just not a “work-study” qualified job.

There are a ton of work-study jobs on campus with a wide range of responsibilities. Some involve working at the front desk of a dorm (aka you sit there and do homework) or serving food in the dining hall or being some random assistant or working in a lab. There are a ton of different ones. There’s a big job fair at the beginning of the year for work-study students and also an online system for finding positions around campus.

I am international student and I emailed them with the same question haha, they told me that they neither offer loans nor work as part of the financial aid package so whatever money you received that is a gift from them. Hope that helped :)

@12santiago3: Dude, that is awesome news!! Thanks for informing this. I wasnt sure about getting a job during freshman year, as it will be quite a deal just adjusting to life in the US.

Congratulations RoughE!

Thanks Faline2!!
