i was a lifeguard last summer. it was a great job but i don't think i want to go back this year. it was simply too stressful for me, knowing that i am in charge of these people's lives. however, i did love being a swim instructor. =D

i want to apply to hotel school next year and i know they favor students with work experience. i doubt the hotels in my town would allow high school students to work for them. and i checked their websites, they don't.

are there any good suggestions for a summer job?

any specific volunteer work that might be good?

Actually, I was lucky and was able to get a job as a front desk officer at one of those big chain hotels... You should try for a hotel job first, if you are really interested in hospitality.
If not, restaurant experience is just as important and just as valued. A girl from my school was accepted to Hotel with a few summers of waiting tables.
Hotel school wants experience in the service industry. Service is very generic; if you show commitment and/or passion for a particular area that you can prove to be service-oriented, then I'm sure you will be a great candidate for admission.
Best of luck.

really? what hotel did you work for? did you contact them or is there a program that you signed up for? how were you able to get the job?

altho i am extremely interested in cornell hotel school, i didn't have an sudden epiphany that told me hospitality is it nor first hand experience that clearly indicate that hospitality is right for me. but the attributes on the hotel school's website did seem to fit me very well, if that matters at all.

some examples of service industry?

my friends got jobs at hotels too, they worked at a hilton, and did stuff in the resuraunt there, you could try something like that

I work at a marriott. I wrote to all the hotels in my area telling them I was applying to Cornell Hotel School ED in the near future. A lot of of the hotels never answered me; a few answered saying they were not interested. But the Marriott got back to me and said I was welcome to intern over the summer. After the summer, I became part of the full staff.
But like I said before, restaurant experience is just as valued. I've also heard from an admissions officer that lifeguard experience is considered service. I think you could probably even get away with saying community service is part of the service industry and has inspired you to go into service. It depends on how well you can stretch it in your essays. But definitely emphasize any service experience that you have; 82% of Hotelies have had service experience prior to acceptance. The Hotel School looks for service experience even more than SATs.

work experience over SATs? that doesnt sound fair.

Yeah, it's weird. Hotel School admissions are hard to predict. But generally, they prefer applicants with low SATs and work experience in the service industry than applicants with high SATs and no experience whatsoever. But I have heard of a few people getting in with high SATs, but work experience is imperative for the school.
