So daughter is stressing over her workload...and it's only day 3! She is not sure if teachers are giving more because of the week off, or if this is to be expected. She has 2 sciences, and Eng. and a Phl. class. Do you think Bing classes are, in themselves, more challenging than perhaps some of the other state schools, or private for that matter? I told her it's like breakingin new shoes...she'll make the adjustment.

Sciences can be very demanding. Some have lots of memorization (bio) and some are like learning a new language. Often high school science teachers are not as strong as they could be and kids don’t get the foundation they need for college courses. Binghamton is a top school. She should adjust, but top college is going to be more demanding than high school. Good luck to her.

I’m going to make the assumption your daughter is a freshman (correct me if I’m wrong). The intro sciences are particularly exhausting since they are designed to be weeder courses. Taking two at once is even harder. And the other two classes are more on top of an already painful workload. What eng and phil classes is she taking? It could be a break or not depending…

Bing courses are designed to be very demanding outside of the classroom, since instead of the usual 3 credits most institutions give, Bing gives 4. They expect, for the extra credit, that you do a lot more studying outside of class than in other places. And the result, depending on the course, can be hard.

Interesting on the intro being weeder classes- she said tonight that her chem discussion tonight was to determine who would be staying in the class. She has no intention of dropping either. The other two are Med. ethics and Reading the Body. I am confident she will do fine- she is a hard worker with a good work ethic- I think I am just the one she wants to vent to!

MD Mom is right on. I’m taking two upper level sciences, among two other COLI classes so I’ll already feeling the workload… When you’re doing intro science classes, you MUST study everyday! The intro bio [117,118] and chem classes [107,108] are meant to weed out students for medical school. You have to work really hard to keep up.

OP here- well, she did fine on the chem pretest and seems so much better having week one over. Yes, it will be work but she also seems pretty psyched. All is good!

I’m in the same situation as Brenstar and I completely agree.

@My Mom - never mind the pretest results, these course require a great deal of commitment to do well in. However, it’s nice to hear that she is willing to work for a good grade.

Medical Ethics is an medium workload for a 100 level, two papers, two tests (Midterm and Final) plus weekly readings. No idea what Reading the Body is.

And that’s good that she feels more on top of the work now.

It’s a tough adjustment, but it’s definitely doable. I took two sciences my first semester, and while at first it was a huge shock, if she’s willing to work hard for it, she’ll be okay. I found the important things to keep in mind when taking these classes is to find something outside the classes that I enjoy doing. Whether it be reading a novel, or hanging out with friends once in awhile.

I took Medical Ethics during my first semester freshman year. It was hands-down the best class I’ve taken at Binghamton University. Professor Gotlib is an extremely competent and engaging professor, and I have no doubt that your daughter will enjoy that class. It should also provide a nice change of pace from the strenuous workload of introductory science courses. Good luck!
