Work Study and FAFSA

I am doing the FAFSA

My son worked on campus part-time during the school year and fulltime during the summer. He exceeded his work study limit.

I have his W2 in front of me but it doesn't specify what was work study and what was regular employment. It does have a much larger amount in box 1 "wages, tips, other compensation" than in box 5 "Medicare wages and tips." Am I supposed to subtract box 5 from box 1 and that is the work study amount?

any help would be appreciated!

Work Study does not incur Medicare or Social Security taxes so subtracting Medicare wages from total wages should give you the WS earnings to enter into FAFSA.
