work study opportunites and pay

Can freshmen go right ahead and begin work study without much hassle? Or is there big competition for it thus it being hard to attain?

Also, how is the pay and hours and stress. I do intend to get a job or internship at some point but I want to do some workstudy so that it doesn't eat up too much of my time during the early years of my college career.

I don't qualify for work-study, but from what I hear, the employers are supposed to be pretty lenient with your schedule, e.g. take leave to study during finals.

what about getting in

I've had my work-study job for just about 2 years now. It's not difficult to get a job as a first year - that's when I was first hired. You just need to check the Work-Study job posting online and send some e-mails (including a resume,) and hopefully you'll get an interview. For me, I get to set my own hours around my schedule. I'm currently only working about 7 hours a week (which actually isn't all that much) and I get paid decently (as in above minimum wage.) Also, I suppose the stress level can come from the job. My job is very unstressful mainly because I file, photocopy, runs errands, stuff envelopes and all the other monotonous office duties that no one else would really want to do... But, I do enjoy working where I work because I'm the only work-study student in my deparment, I don't have a lot of work (meaning more time to sit and do homework,) and my boss is super nice.

Can pay go up to double digits per hr?

I think it depends on what the job is. I make almost $10 an hour which, in my opinion, is pretty good considering I don't actually do very much...

jobs are abundant.

i called the asucla people (associated students) and the guy i talked to told me that they have job openings available every week. he said not to worry about finding a job, because there are always tons of them around.

<a href="http://www.asucla.ucla.edu/jobs.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.asucla.ucla.edu/jobs.asp</a></p>

asucla and workstudy are different?

i work for asucla! event services =) aHAha. anyway.. yes asucla and work study is different. work study is mostly clerical jobs and the employers get help from the government to pay you.

Can u tell me the differences, pros and cons?

Working for ASUCLA is like having a regular part-time job whereas if you're a work-study student, you can only work enough hours to pay for your award. For example, I was awarded $2500 in work-study which, depending on my hourly wage, works out to be about 260 hours of paid work for the entire academic school year. Once I reach 260 hours, I cannot be employed as a workstudy student.
