Does anyone know anything about work study at Penn State. I'd like get a work study job but I need to know more first.

How does one go about getting a work study position? What did you do? Also what job did you have and what was it like?

Any info would be appreciated.

First (and you probably already know this), you must be approved for work study as part of your financial aid package. Then you can search for work study positions via eLion (there’s a link in the menu).

The good news is there are a ton of work study jobs at PSU, in a variety of settings, from helping out in an office to staffing the computer labs. The bad news is, the popular gigs tend to fill up quickly. Often, the same students will stay on from one semester to the next, so the spots may be filled before they’re ever really open.

So once you confirm you’ve been approved for work study, start checking on eLion for listings. (You can’t do this until you’ve been to FTCAP and gotten your access account.) If there’s a particular department you’re really interested in, you can always call and ask if they have any work study positions available.

I have already been approved to do work study and I’ve already researched and found a job I’m interested in. Its a lab assistant job in the Eberly College of Science (which I’m enrolled in.

I would love to secure the position now as there are only 3 spots available. I just didn’t know if I should start calling and inquiring now, before fall semester even begins. Or should I wait until I get on campus in the fall?

I would definitely start calling now. My sons lined up their work study gigs way before the semester started. (Sometimes the “boss” will want to wait until the first week of the semester to finalize everyone’s schedule - in case anyone rearranges their class schedule.) Also, be warned that the info on eLion is often outdated. My sons wasted time calling a bunch of places listed as having openings, only to discover they either had no openings at all, or had already long since filled them.

Okay, thanks so much. You don’t know how much you’ve helped me. I wasn’t sure if it was okay to call and I didn’t want to ruin any chances by calling early or waiting to late.

How did you all get approved for work study already? I looked at my student aid on elion today and it’s still blank.

Did you fill out the FASFA and list Penn State as your school. After you do that you’ll get your FASFA reviewed. When they “score” you (I guess you’d call it that) they send the score to Penn State who gives you a Financial Aid Package. The work study allotment should be listed in your package if Penn State is giving you anything at all. It’s rare but it could be possible that you don’t qualify for financial aid.

^I do qualify for aid in fact they pay for everything except room and board. I didn’t get my Financial Aid Package yet which ****es me off because it seems like they wait until the last day after everyone else to put it up on elion.
