Work Study

I just completed my daughter's FAFSA and there was no indication of her qualifying for work study. What are the chances of receiving work study? It did indicate that she was eligible for Pell Grants but the amount was $100 less than last year. Is this preliminary amount accurate?

Only Pell and Direct loans will be on the FAFSA as aid for which a student qualifies - any other aid, such as work study or FSEOG - is campus based (that is, a lump sum is awarded to a school, which divvies it up among its population of students). Because each campus has a unique student population, whether or not a student qualifies for work study, as well as how much will be awarded, is up to the school. FAFSA is a general form, so it only lists “for sure” aid.

Work study isn’t guaranteed, so no one knows whether your D will get some or not. Schools award W-S as they see fit. Some can only award to those who have 0 EFCs or very low EFCs, some can award to other students.

Filing FAFSA early can help since schools run out of WS and sometimes award on a first come/first serve basis.
