Work-study

I'm elegible to earn up to $4000 of work study money. What sorts of work-study jobs are available? Are they easy to get? And finally, is it very difficult maintaining a job while also taking a full courseload?

bump..............

I have no idea, but you should try it on for size.... See if it fits; and if it does, great! But if it doesn't, meh, just quit the job : P

i know theres the america reads one, which you should have gotten an email about a couple days ago. i heard thats the best one cuz you get $10-$12 an hour for helping teach kids and stuff. Id love to do it cuz it sounds really fun, but im not gonna try to do workstudy first semester at least because we're gonna have a lot of new things to get used to and it just might be too much

I plan on doing America reads, but I can only get about 7 or 8 hours a week because Tisch studio training TAKES UP ALL YOUR TIME IN THE WORLD.

Does anyone know if you can hold two jobs w/in the work study program?

Oh, and you can also work for the NYU bookstores, but you have to be able to work a min. of 10 hours a week.

During orientation we will find out more about it. You have to register for work study while at NYU- I'm sure our advisors will tell us all about it.

Question: I filled out my FAFSA with 2005 information. Do we have to update it with 2006 info as soon as we get it, or can we wait until next year when we fill out the FAFSA for financial aid to put our 2006 info in (b/c we still won't have the 2007, anyways...).

When you fill out a fafsa, it's for the past year. So, for this year, your information has to be 2005 stuff because 06 hasn't finished yet. Your financial aid is based on the previous year.

That's what I assumed, but I wasn't sure. Thanks!

i also got the america reads e-mail
but thought the salary was really little and it'd take me a really long time to come up with $4k per school year, right?
wouldnt a job outside of campus pay more.. like working part time at a company or doesnt that count as work study? (as long as I pay the 4k does it really matter?)

you dont have to do the 4k workstudy if you dont want to. and no, outside ones dont count towards workstudy. the only advantages of workstudy are that they can be a little more flexible around your school hours and they dont count against you on fafsa (as in, they dont count as income so they arent factored in to how much you earned in a year). another note, actually $10 an hour is pretty good. if you just went to find a random other job (non-workstudy), unless you got lucky, did something that requires skill, or did telemarketing, youd probably be making $7-$8 an hour, MINUS taxes, AND it would count against you on fafsa. so take those things into consideration as well.

The amount they list for workstudy $$ is the maximum that NYU will pay you for a workstudy job over the course of the year. Being able to work enough hours to earn $4000 is almost impossible if you want to do well in school, and also to have even a little social life. I don't know anyone who's ever had two workstudy jobs. It's hard enough to find one good one that will fit in with your schedule. For Tisch kids it's even more difficult because they're unavailable three full days a week with studio and then there are many evenings that they are committed with their tech responsibilities. America Reads doesn't often work for Tisch kids because you won't have enough time on your M and W for eight hours of work. Your other classes will be on those days and you'll have to find time on those days to do your WTE museum trips, etc. Also America Reads is done during school hours for the kids and most involve fairly long commutes (like to Brooklyn or Queens). No Tisch kids I know were able to do America Reads.

When do we pick our schedule for America Reads? I ask because I can't attend a June/July orientation, only the August one so I won't know my schedule until right before classes begin.

matth, do you know of any workstudy jobs that are easier for Tisch kids to have? I'll be at the film department this fall and wanted to have one if possible.

i was thinking of working at a airlina company part time or a jewelry company on 5th ave and not be a cashier or stewardess. do they also pay 8$ per hour in real offices and real (part-time jobs)? Dont you get a monthly salary?
and is it better to choose my class schedule according to my working hours or my working hours according to my class schedule (GSP student)???
Thanks

and one more question to old GSPers and sophmores: if i dont sign up for America Reads immediately now cause im still hoping to find a better paying job outside of campus would I be missing a very good opportunity and if yes can I sign up and then decide the other way (before the work starts-when things are more clear around August)??
are there better jobs without a lot of commuting NYU can offer or is America Reads the best option?
