Working part time job affect financial aid?

I have just acquired a part time job that pays me $ 11.50 an hour, 4 hours a day 5 days a week. So I get about $160 a week after taxes. They also have a work study program which will give me about $1,600 after a year that I have worked. Will working at this job affect what I get from financial aid? I save all my money and usually do not spend at all.

Here's a breakdown of what my finances look like:

Estimated Financial Aid Budget -15,054.00
Expected Family Contribution -4,583.00
Estimated Need - 10,471.00
Total Aid -6,712.00
Remaining Need -3,759.00

I believe your income amount will not affect your financial aid. If you have a sum of money IN the bank, however, 20% of that amount will be assessed when calculating your financial need.

Is this a work study job? If so, the amount earned for work study is NOT counted in your FAFSA calculation for subsequent years.

Take the job. It is wonderful that you have this opportunity to work. IF your financial aid is affected, and you are a saver, you should be able to make up the difference with some of your earnings.

In my opinion, there is never anything bad about taking a job.

Right now it’s just a regular part-time job, after december 24th, that is when I am eligible for work study.

^You should only work 20 hours a week. I think more than 20 hours will impact your grades.

It is my understanding that since you are a minor, it won’t be taken into account. I heard this from my mom who knows a lot about finances, and you should also check on the college’s expected amount of need met. Also, should your PT job be necessary income for your family, that will definitely not be counted against you.

EDIT: I made a hasty generalization that you were a minor, sorry about that. My suggestion is to contact the college directly; no need to apply to a school that may not be financially feasible.
