workload

In researching Davidson, I keep reading that the school has a tremendous workload. More specifically, what makes the amount of work so overwhelming? (For ex., excessive number of papers, mercilessly fast pace of courses, frequent tests, etc. Or perhaps the students are exaggerating- after all, most of them haven't attended other colleges, so they don't have any basis for comparison. All colleges are stressful, and I don't see why Davidson would be any more so than comparably high-ranked liberal arts colleges.)

Also important to me is the intellectual climate of the school. Are students driven by a desire to learn and seek truth, or are they chiefly concerned with outperforming each other and getting high GPAs? Any info would be appreciated.
