The Senegal fans in the stands are INCREDIBLE. I love World Cup time!
I have seen enough of Haji Wright to say that I don’t want to see him play on the NT ever again! Somewhere Ricardo Pepi is laughing his a$$ of crying himself to sleep every night.
I’m watching the Poland-Argentina game and Argentina is winning 2-0 over Poland.
If I heard correctly, with Mexico beating Saudi Arabia right now, Poland would advance over Mexico, because of the # of yellow cards Mexico has received is 7 and Poland has 5. That’s a few tiebreakers down the chart.
One more Argentina or Mexico goal would put Mexico into the next round, not Poland.
That’s a bummer for Mexico. I was hoping they would advance.
Mexico is out. Bummer. Poland looked terrible.
I thought Poland advanced over Mexico due to goal differential, zero for Poland vs. -1 for Mexico?
The tie breakers explained…
Saudi Arabia scored a goal at 90+5’, which changed the tiebreaker back to goal differential.
The Polish goalie was a beast in the first half, amazing performance.
I was bummed when Saudi Arabia scored. I would have been downright giddy had Mexico had crashed out because of yellow cards. Now I have to just settle for being extremely happy to have them done.
Que malo eres!
It was tough for me as a former home owner in to root “against” them but so so pleased with the win!!!
Felt bad for Belgium-- they couldn’t finish today. Their coach has already resigned.
Germany beats Costa Rica 4-2, but Germany is out.
Japan and Spain move on in Group E.
It was interesting to see Germany find an extra gear and step it up after Costa Rica went ahead.
The US is the only CONCACAF team to make it to the round of 16.
My German heart is aching. Not the best performance by the coach, curious to see what his future as a national coach looks like…
As a soccer nerd, I’m curious to see what happens. The last time Germany went through a bad run like this they did “Das Reboot” which led to a restructuring/rethinking about all levels of the sport. This led to some revolutionary ideas in youth soccer. Commentators last night talked about the need for Das Reboot v2.0.
They have a good young squad and a few veterans. However, Thomas Mueller needs to retire. They can always look at Belgium for a good laugh.
Quite a unique moment.
Cameroon needs to score 2 goals against Brazil and need help from Serbia against Switzerland.
So, the game is tied 0-0 between Cameroon and Brazil, a player from Cameroon scores a goal, takes his shirt off, gets his 2nd yellow card and has to leave the field. A walk-off goal.
Cameroon is now playing a man down needing a 2nd goal against Brazil, the tournament favorite. Oy. Cameroon beats Brazil 1-0, but they’re out.
Round of 16 is set:
Netherlands/USA
Argentina/Australia
→ Winners play in quarterfinals
Brazil/S Korea
Croatia/Japan
Advancing team from each quad plays in the semifinal
France/Poland
England/Senegal
Spain/Morocco
Portugal/Swiss
If it goes chalk (probably won’t…), we’d be looking at Argentina/Brazil in one semi and France/Spain in the other.
