World of Warcraft

So the release date for the new expansion of WoW is Sept 25, most thought it would be maybe around Dec or Nov. But it falls around the time when most college kids are getting settled in.

Do you play World of Warcraft? How do you balance your time? Have you abandoned video games in general (specifically never ending MMO's)?

Is playing WoW in college smart realistically speaking?
Thanks.

It really depends on you. My girlfriend played World of Warcraft her first semester and earned a 3.8.

The first time I ever played it was in the Spring of 2011 and I became very addicted to it. I put in over 60 days during that semester, slept through my classes, ditched classes, etc. I came out with a 3.2 that semester, which isn’t bad considering how relatively little effort I put into everything (was taking college honors classes and Calc III at the time).

However, this past school year I cancelled my subscription and didn’t look back for the whole thing. I used to play a lot of console games too, but I barely played any because I was studying and trying to get as good of a grade as possible in my courses. I did extremely well and ended up transferring (getting accepted to) into all of the colleges I wanted. Now, I don’t supposed you’re a transfer student so that doesn’t apply to you.

Anyway, I’d recommend occasionally gaming. First thing is first: Take care of your education. Are you really going to let a 15 dollar a month game ruin a school year that costs upwards of 20K a year (mine does at least). I’ll probably wait until December to play the expansion when school is out and I have a month off. School comes first! Always.

So, yeah. I’m going to abandon playing. I’ve got a month or two left till school starts, so I’ll be playing until then. :stuck_out_tongue: I play on Skullcrusher.

Perhaps play during school breaks but it would be best to avoid playing wow.

Balance your time well. I used to be quite addicted in middle/early high school to none other than RuneScape, but I never let my grades suffer. Do your work first, then play after. Or if you’re bossing (not sure if that’s the right word, maybe raiding? I’m unfamiliar with MMORPG lingo) do that, then make sure your work gets done. As long as you get your work done and are willing to sacrifice social time, it should not be an issue.

I’m a gamer, however, i manage my time wisely. For example, I’ll set a block of time aside each day (normally about an hour or so) of free time. What i do in that free time can be anything (napping, reading, videogaming). If i do well on a test, I double that time for a day as a reward for myself.

Atemporal, depends on the MMO in question. On the one i play, we often refer to such things (normally because they have to be done in an area with a group) as a dp (or dungeon partying).

I prefer to play free games (you know… cause I’m a college student lol). My bf and I both play a few games pretty consistently and have good GPAs. Mine’s 3.8+ and we both work (me 2-3 jobs and him 1-2). We make it work by using games as a reward. Plus many of our friends play so it’s a great way to mix gaming and socializing lol.

As long as you put work first, there is no reason to give up games. If you know that you have a hard time balancing, give yourself at least a month to get accustomed to college work and life and such.

I would not recommend raiding unless you are in a guild that does less than a couple hours a day.

With the new expansion you may be unable to get off the PC even though you have work to do so keep that in mind

Same here romani. I cannot justify spending money every month just for a subscription.

All play and no work makes Jack a mere toy.”

Thanks guys  anyone else addicted to the social aspect of the game also?

I am lol. Although I’m kind of bored with the game, I just log on to duel and talk to friends.

My server has been dead and a lot of drama happened between me and some other people so I havve some resentment from that

I guess it would depend on how good you are at the game or want to get-- with more difficulty being on the pvp elements (well, unless you’re healing heroic raids). If you play and you are good, then you’ll find other good people and will get sucked into a strict schedule most likely (which I strayed away from).

There are situations where this isn’t the case though, but you would need to establish yourself with either achievements or a reputation on your realm. If you find the right people, you can get HWL, pretty good raid achievements, and certainly 2200 3s/5s without needing to be there many nights a week, but more often than not it will take an enormous amount of time .

I haven’t played in 6 months, but it’s only because it’s too hard to play and not want to succeed or work towards a goal (also I wanted to center my life around other things that I believe are more important)- with achievements its easy to get into great groups, but most of the groups going places have a schedule- missing usually means exclusion. Even more strict are guilds, and personally feeling like you’re letting others down by missing a raid or rbg or arenas wasn’t for me.

Anyways, some of the people I played with who were in the 2500 rbg groups and had all of the achieves were in college, but who knows where or how they were doing (I’m going into my last year of HS). Then again, I also met a guy that lived in his grandma’s house and donated plasma every week to pay for the game-- just make sure you don’t end up like that guy!!

Tl;dr. If you’re ambitious and good at the game I’d advise you not to, because you’ll inevitably pick a goal and work towards it which will kill your time and possibly social life, but if you’re a casual player and rl friends/school are always first, then there should be no problem (well there are more options, but you get the idea).

Sorry, it’s been awhile and I still like talking about the game in detail : ).

I used to play a lot of games in high school (both online and off: some of my biggest were Minecraft and The Lord of the Rings Online), but since I’ve entered college my gaming has been largely limited to during vacations and occasional binges when I feel a need to reset my brain after a lot of studying.

What I’ve found is not so much that I haven’t had time for gaming, but that I can’t justify spending time on it. During the school year there’s always something that needs to get done, and even if I wouldn’t be doing it anyway the knowledge that it is hanging over me keeps me from enjoying long gaming sessions.

Pretty much what Alliancedude said

I’ve always wanted to try world of Warcraft but was afraid that was like the point of no return… Lol. But, I don’t have any room to talk, cuz I play League of Legends instead haha

League isn’t too bad. 1-2 games only puts you at an hour or so.

I had a friend who temporarily tried out World of Warcraft, and went from 8 AM to 9 PM one day. His girlfriend was appalled, lol.

Yeah League is our substitute. I like free :)

But if you’re like me and buy temping skins (Foxfire Ahri), no longer free. :P

Though I’m not complaining, haha. Noticed this (I’m sure others did) though:

Foxfire Ahri
Chrome Rammus
Explorer Ezreal
Safari Caitlyn

They need an Opera Sona or something.

My bf and I bought each other skins for our anniversary lol. I got him one for Amumu… Can’t remember which now lol.
