Hello I just finished my freshman year at wayne state. My first semest i took 16 creds. Took chm 1220 chm1230(lab), Bio 1510, History of civ, and Eng 1010, I got a 3.91. only A- was in English..

My second semester i took 12 credits. Organic 1 Oragnic 1 lab, Microbiology, and Precalc.
I got Bs in Orgo and Micro, B+ in precalc. and a A- in organic lab.

my current gpa is a 3.57.

I am currently beside my self at my second semester, and i am terified about my chances at getting into either UofM,, MSU, or Wayne state, medical schools.

I dont know if this is considered a hard freshmen year but i dont know how that B in micro and orgo will affect my chaneces of getting into med school.

any advice will be nice. Thanks

You’re doing fine so far.

UMSOM is a tough admit for all applicants, both in-state and OOS, but MI has (or will have by the time you apply) 5 additional med school beside UM.

Bs in orgo and micro will not significantly damage your chances for admission to medical school.(So long as you don’t give them a whole lot of other Bs to keep company with.)

Ok thanks. But i do have 2 other questions… 1st. does medical look at my letter grade and then calculate my gpa? or do they just go off of what my school calculated? because Wayn state has a very hard grading scale… Where a B+ is a 3.33. and a A- is a 3.67 Where all the other college i have looked at have gpas of B+ 3.4 n A-=3.7

2nd i was wondering for medical school if the difficulty of degree is accounted for? My biochemistry degree with a focus in organic biochemistry is considered an extremely hard degree. While many people are just going for the pre med with basic prereqs and a much easier degree.
thanks for input

When you apply thru AMCAS, you (and AMCAS) will calculate your GPA using this chart:

https://www.aamc.org/students/download/181676/data/

A B+ earns you 3.3 quality points and an A- earns 3.7 quality points . (So you gain a bit on the A- but lose a bit on the B+.)

BTW, your college’s weighting of grades is pretty much the standard practice. Nothing at all “very hard” about it.

Your GPA is your GPA. You will not get any special consideration just because you think you have a “harder” major than some other applicant. After all, difficulty is in the eye of the beholder.

You type your grades into AMCAS, they calculate the GPA in a way that is consistent for all the applicants.
