Can something go on my student record without me knowing or being informed? Is it possible for me, as a high school student, to take a look at my record?
It can absolutely go onto your record without informing you-- there simply isn’t time to notify each student every time a notation is added. That said, under normal circumstances, you would be aware of the events surrounding the record. So, for example, if you were suspended for bullying, it could be put on your record, and you would logically expect it to be there.
As to seeing it, I imagine that’s something your parents would take up with administration.
Typically you won’t see what’s in the letters of recommendation written for you-- most people suggest that kids sign the waiver.
Your or your parents should be able to request to see your record. Speak to your guidance counselor.
I have another question to ask. I’ll clarify the first situation. At the tutoring place I attend, I did something stupid and the teachers there got mad at me. When I signed up for the tutoring place, I was required to tell them the high school I went to. Would they have the ability to tell my school deans to put this incident on my record, even though it occurred outside of my own high school?
Probably not but you can forget about a letter of rec from anyone at the tutoring place.
Are your parents aware of this situation? You may not be able to see your high school record without their intervention. So if you don’t want them to know you are out of luck.
Ah it’s fine I guess, thank you all for your replies. What’s the worst that can happen now? The people at the tutoring place wouldn’t be able to do anything right?
Probably not but you never know.
It depends on what you did. If it’s illegal, there are things they can do. If you destroyed property or defamed or threatened or hurt someone, there are things they can do.
If 'teachers"-- plural— are mad at you, then it sounds like you owe someone, at minimum, an apology.
And keeping your parents in the loop is probably a good idea. They’ll try to advocate for you, but won’t want to be blindsided.
The only thing I’m worried about is what I did. I slammed open a door because I was really irritated that time but I didn’t cause any property damage nor did I do anything to anyone. I apologized to the teachers there after I had cooled down a bit.
Oh, my goodness, I though it was so very much worse than that!!!
Nope, they’re not going to contact your school. They’re going to vent for 30 seconds about kids and then move on and forget it.
Learn from your mistakes, but don’t sweat this one. If you really want to make up for it, stop by Dunkin Donuts and get some munchkins for the faculty as an apology.
Alright, thank you. So just to clarify, I can’t get in trouble from this incident right?
Unlikely but nobody here can tell you for certain. As I recommended above you or your parents can ask your guidance counselor to let you review your record.
You slammed a door? That’s what they are so upset about? Lol, even they told colleges, I doubt they would really care.
It sounds like you have a suspension on your HS record already. You should definitely talk to your college counselor about what will go in the counselor’s statement of your application.
Ah, you need to stop doing stupid things. Then you won’t have to fret about your record.
A similar question. Are Universities able to see what high-schools you attended without you actually stating it?
Yes. Each school you e attended will be sending a transcript to each college you’re applying to.
At my high school, they are relatively lenient about suspensions. Before my first suspension, i was a really good student with a 3.7/4 gpa and a clean record, but when i first got suspended, my guidance counselor said that because the time of the suspension was less than 6 days and it was my first offense, then it would go off my record. It was really a stupid incident where somebody was getting cyberbullied in a groupchat. The only thing I said was “lol” and went to bed, next thing you know i show up to school as a “cyberbully.” I’m still not sure if it really went off my record but theres nothing i could do but to believe my counselor. Anyways, onto this incident, i’m just scared that the staff at my tutoring place would be really mad and contact my school to put this on my record and sabotage me.
