I thought at Upenn everyone gets the same tuition rate. Don't they?

yeah, but I think he/she was referring to other universities.
oyster farms... sounds interesting, I want to read his/her essay!
According to Penn's website, 22 students from Oregon matriculated last year, which means more than that were accepted. That's more than most states, and I would think it's competitive.

yea they do... it's a private school... only diff is financial aid

how is it different in FinAid?

I think what elemental_rights meant was that everyone has different financial aid packages, not just for DC

wow, you guys are completely foolish in arguing why someone got accepted into penn with qualifications you think are low.

WOW, its funny because many of you guys aren't getting in and then will blame it on other less qualified people.

Colleges know what they are doing. Dont act like you can justify their choices.

...there's nothing wrong with trying to understand WHY someone got in...

Actually, it only helps people. Understanding what sets people apart and what kinds of people get in is not only interesting but helpful. No one was putting the kid down. If anything, people were saying that he was interesting because he wrote about oyster farming. Someone even wanted to read the essay, and a few people said he was a genius for writing about something so unusual.

So chill out, and stop calling people foolish for simply trying to understand something.

First of all I am addressing the tone in which people are questioning his candidacy. Look at the title of the thread for crying out loud.

And i bet you guys are considering the applicant unworthy of penn solely because of his SAT scores which is a 1300. You guys are absolutely clueless considering that a quarter of penn has SAT's less than 1330 which amounts to around 2,400 students.

People on CC think that its youre SAT score thatll get you into elite colleges. Its pretty funny because some people here who actually have 1500's will be rejected thinking this, when they know absolutely nothing about college admissions.

Colleges want a reason to take you. And in the case of super elite colleges, that is not your SAT scores.

I go to Exeter which sends at least 100 out of 300 seniors every year to ivy league schools every year. I have seen countless high stat applicants get rejected for lower stat kids who actually have passions and special qualities.

Stanford rejects more than 60% of the 1600's it receives.

Some of you need a reality check.

is that true?

DiamondT - I don't disagree with most of what you said. Still, I think the point was that this supposed person really didn't have any other hook so to speak, except for the essay and the location. If you read through the posts from this year and last year, you do start to get a sense of what it takes to get in.
There have been numerous threads on CC relating to how Penn wants diversity, thru geography, talents, background, or whatever. I don't think anyone doubts that it takes more than a high stat kid to get in, but it's also naive to think that a low stat kid is going to get in without something else pretty amazing. Even in the short amount of time I've read CC, it's obvious that this kid, as described by the OP - hardly any advanced courses, debate was the only hook - would not normally be getting into Penn.
I think the OPs idea here, was actually more similar to what YOU are saying - that sometimes things other than SATs DO count. So, except for the title, that you object to, you guys are really not that far apart in what u r saying.

y so hostile and overpowering DiamondT. Calm down.

I think that we know a lil bit about what it takes to get into penn. We know that the majority may not get in.

"WOW, its funny because many of you guys aren't getting in and then will blame it on other less qualified people."

This has NO relativity to your argument.

We are just discussing what made the Adcom pick this guy; not saying that he didn't deserve anything. I think that you're making a lil too many assumptions, and that you are generalizing we CC'ers into one catergory of the "high and mighty, snobby, perfect students."

WE"RE NOT.

We are students whom choose to discuss and learn from one another in a friendly environment. I think it is ludicrous that you came from no where ranting and raving because you obviously misinterpreted the tone and purpose the entire thread; except for the tittle.

--just my two cents

BTW- whom was arguing?

DiamondT:
"wow, you guys are completely foolish in arguing why someone got accepted into penn with qualifications you think are low."

Seriously, DiamondT...i dunno if you read these forums, but no one (or almost no one) on here thinks they are getting in because of their 1500, or their 4.0. We all know how hard it is to get into the school, and how important it is to set yourself apart. That's why we are pointing out the kids unusual qualities. And by no means is anyone blaming their rejection on "less qualified applicants"...at least im sure most of the people on here won't be. Don't overgeneralize us to be some group of naive, stuck up, grade-snobs.

Oh and im sure no one on here is blaming their rejection on less qualified applicants..because we are all getting in...right CCers..haha

someone has there panties in a twist... and im not talking about bush w.... this thread was totally fun until someone got mad... oh by the way... im from kentucky applying to penn... i get special scholarships for being literate.

HAHA..musaka...that was refreshing

ugh.. first of all.. exeter sucks.. andover is a hell of a lot better ^^

second of all.. i think we just found another kid who deserves to be condemned to a hellish 4 years at princeton..

oh!.............lol

ok, that was meant for musaka, but it still works for the grade A princeton burn ;)

this thread made me happy on my insides...i dont have the highest sat scores...but i am freakishly diverse...and weird...and i absolutely want to go to penn....so bad... cries a little
