I Hate Writing!...:

Wow it seems like I'm in the minority here...German is actually one of my favorite languages. I don't really like the way most Asian languages sound. And I have to say, I don't really like English that much.

I speak Chinese and I am highly offended by this thread. I think most people believe Chinese is just "ching chong hong kong king kong ping pong" but if you really study the language and actually speak it as opposed to polluting your mind with unwarranted stereotypes, you will understand that your preconceptions are simply untrue.

I also think part of the negative perception of the language has nothing to do with the language at all, but rather, the American people's distorted view of the Chinese government. Many people who bash China have never even been to China, have never even experienced the culture, have never even studied Chinese history, etc. but instead, formulate their views on preconceptions and racial stereotypes. The word "China" immediately brings up images of Communism and Mao and sweatshops and crowded streets, and this negative template somehow also gets transferred to the language, even though most people are quite uninformed and lack experience with the language.

As "Americans", we also have to be careful about how we portray ourselves to other nations. We are supposedly fighting this war on terrorism according to W, yet we continue to formulate unjustified negative perceptions about other cultures, while simultaneously complaing about how other countries do not give us enough respect. Double standard and Catch-22 define our current country.

sad that catch 22 represents the opinion of the majority
the language I abhor is trailer-trash.

yall get dem dam beers cletus

or

dersa resorant owside

I second sempitern's motion. can't stand improper english, especially ain't and double negatives.

No love for German?
I think it's kind of sexy because it's so masculine and powerful.

I speak Mandarin and I'm meh about it's beauty but taiwanese mandarin is really cute...I start talking like it when I watch too many soap operas...

I agree with tebro and cherrybarry... Whoever started this thread should end it now since it is pointless. Plus, since I'm Chinese myself, I'm quite offended by the fact that some people are calling it "ugly" and "disgusting." Please stop posting such negative comments when there are people who speak that particular language on this board. I really like Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, etc...and I don't think that it's nice to call any language "hideous"...

To be honest, I think all languages sound pretty awesome. I love watching international TV. I wanna learn them all. :)

I took German in junior high and even though I hated it at the time, I kind of want to re-learn it.

German is beautiful. Chinese is fascinating.

<<romanian, arabic,="" farsi,="" and="" hindi.="" horrible="" sounding="" languages.="">>
As a speaker of both Romanian and Arabic, I can say that they sound great. And so do all languages. There is not one single language in this world that is inherently horrible. We rather associate beauty or ugliness with a language because of our own stereotypes. I am personally in love with all languages, with the way they sound and the thoughts hearing them bring in my mind. And to prove my point about Romanian, here is a favorite lyric of mine:
"Vrei soare, soare </romanian,>

I guess it's all what you're used to. English is a GERMANIC language and the most closely related to German, but we are used to hearing it and it sounds fine to us. Scandanavian languages are also "germanic". The romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian and Portugese) have nothing to do with "romance". They are called romance languages because they derived from the ROMAN empire and thus from Latin.

btw, Romanian is a Romance language as well.

I can't say that I've heard a language I honestly think sounds bad. they are all either intriguing or beautiful.

first of all, i am surprised by how many chinese are on this thread... second, every language is unique and should be appreciated equally and should be judged by its vocalizations. you think a language sounds harsh because you have not been exposed to it enough.

Who said japanese was bad? you're wrong. it sounds SHEEK and sophisticated. i love japanese...and i can speak it too, and when i do, i feel like i'm talking something pretty.

FARSI?

Who said japanese was bad? you're wrong. it sounds SHEEK and sophisticated. i love japanese...and i can speak it too, and when i do, i feel like i'm talking something pretty.

FARSI? that is not horrible! it's absolutely beautiful! it is INDO-EUROPEAN, so it is a european language [like french].

in fact my friend let me listen to this one farsi track and i fell in love with the lanugage. it's so nice;

http://eworldrecords.com/bardidtou.html

if you click on 'sample' you'll know what i'm talking about...wow..

japanese, persian, french and arabic are the most beautiful

I speak Chinese, English, Japanese, Spanish, German, and Taiwanese. My view on them:

Chinese -- i like it but since it is my mother tongue, I might be biased =)
English -- it's ok. Not bad, not awesome either.
Japanese -- only complaint: too flat sounding
Spanish -- not a bad sounding language at all!
German -- sounds too rough
Taiwanese -- I think it only sounds good to native speakers...I love some Taiwanese songs though!

I like French and Arabic (learned it for half a year). Romanian is not that bad, neither is Finnish. In my view, having a prejudice in a language you don't speak is incorrect. You have to learn it to get the real "feel" of the language.

I hate PC-type anger so much- for the love of God we're just having some fun. I personally wouldn't give a crap if anyone said English SOUNDED ungly, because well, ugly sound is so subjective- like taste or looks. I just can't stand pseudo-intellectuals who think they're so high-and-mighty that everything has to offend them.

Now, for my list of UGLY sounding languages:

Pikey (for those who haven't seen Snatch- basically Irish + English spoken very fast).

German- rough

Chinese- just to tick off people on this thread, plus again, just a harsher sound to it.
I
mproper English- not necessarily the Southern accent (very smooth and pleseant), but just bad English. For some reason, I've become a stickler with can/may.

And there you have it.

"it sounds SHEEK"

Is that a joke or do you not know how to spell chic?

Some people find Quebecois, a dilect of french, to be really harsh sounding and unpleasant. I happen to like it though. even more than parisian french.
