My son was accepted into Mechanical Engineering and we are thrilled. His friend was awarded the Evan's Scholarship, ACT of 30, 5.35 (5 point scale), national honor society, etc. He checked the box for alternate choice and was denied everything. We know of several other kids at the school who got in to DGS with scores of 27.

This kid lost his mother two years ago and is mainly doing all this on his own. We don't want to give him false hope. Should he appeal?

honestly i wouldn't. Appealing rarely results in the college changing it's mind and will all the things that he has gone through, I don't think it would help to get denied again.

I would go ahead and appeal, but only if Champaign is his first or second school choice. I am going to appeal as well, because I was straight up rejected although I have an ACT of 28 and gpa of 3.8 out of 4.0. and Champaign is my first school choice as well. There's no harm in trying, and one of the founders of Youtube, Jawed Karim appealed and got in. Good Luck!
