My school limits the number of applications to 6, so I have to pick schools wisely. I have decided to apply to schools where I have a chance because I don't want to end up being rejected from all schools. Do I have a decent enough shot to warrant applying?

I definitely think you have the scores, grades, and distinguishing activities and awards to merit a good chance. If you are passionate about attending the school you should definitely apply and have fun with the essays! Good luck!

^ Thanks. Since UChicago only considers Math and Critical Reading, is my 1540/1600 more competitive than my 2280/2400?

chinesedumplings, you have to understand that UChicago or any other schools (for the most part) won’t differentiate that much between a 1540/1600 or a 2280/2400. Anything above a 2200 is pretty amazing.

Rather, it’s your essays and how you come off as an individual that will really make or break your application. You can have (to a certain extent) not the best grades, but if you come off as a person that genuinely loves learning, UChicago will favor you over someone who has perfect grades but seems to want to go to UChicago just because it’s ranked in the top 10 of the USNWR college rankings.

You have the numbers. Now you have to prove to the admissions committee that you truly want to attend the school.

Good luck! If you need me to read any of your essays, feel free to hit me up with a PM. :)

Note: My school limited me to 10 schools, but I ended up applying to more than that. Talk to your counselors about it. I don’t think it’s very fair to limit you to 6 colleges when you desire to apply to more.

I tried. There seems to be no budging them. They gave some reason, which I forgot, but it was essentially trying to cover the fact that they are lazy bastards.

You are in almost exactly the same situation as I was last year (it’s actually kinda freaky): 800M/740CR/800M2/800P/800C/int’l/no financial aid. The only difference is the EC’s, and I only really did a teaching thing (where I stayed after school to help people who were failing in their classes - I didn’t even elaborate on this in my essays; I just had a letter from the school thanking me), and the fact that I was/am Indian and you’re Chinese.

Write good essays and you shouldn’t be worried. I’m not saying you’ll get in or you won’t get rejected, but you definitely have at least a good shot.

^ Thanks a lot. It’s kind of freaky. :D

Write good essays and you’re in. I had a similar CV, maybe a bit under, wrote and rewrote my essays until they were perfect, and got in EA, so you should be swell. Anyways, I’ve deferred my enrollment to next year, so maybe I’ll see you at orientation. ;)

You’ve got the scores and grades you need.
Write great essays.

Do any of you mind if you could tell me your ECs? I would love to see how I compare.

Search for the Class of '14 EA and RD decision threads. ECs and other factors are included pretty comprehensively in them.

EC’s are hard to compare, there are millions of them. The keys to impress are:
- leadership
- Make a difference to others
- Betterment to yourself
- Work at it with passion and still get good grades

When we visited UChicago, the person leading the information session said that they didn’t care about leadership and service as much as the Ivy League schools do. They want to see that you spend your time doing something interesting.

Perhaps that is the reason why my DD got off the waitlist. She did some thing 2 to 4 from my list above.

:)

That’s insane that your school limits the number of applications. If I were you, I would get copies of everything you need to apply and send the extra applications out yourself.
