Would a recommendation from a Brandeis professor help my chances?

<p>I’m a sophomore and I really know nothing about the boundaries/benefits of certain recommendations as I obviously haven’t thought much about asking for them yet.</p>

<p>My family is very close to a renowned Brandeis Judaic Studies professor. Am I even allowed to get a recommendation from him? </p>

<p>How could this (assuming it is a good recommendation) affect my chances for admission?</p>

<p>Thank you so much! I want to know if I should be kissing his a** for the next two years, haha!</p>
