Would AP US History Crash Course (REA) be sufficient to score a 5?

Hello all,

The APUSH exam is fast approaching and naturally, I can’t say I’m not nervous. I have been drifting in and out of paying attention to my APUSH teacher in class throughout the year, but I am quite good at self-studying. I recently bought the APUSH CC book and have started to look through it. Would it be enough to score a 5? I’ve been wondering this because I have read on other threads that it is helpful for the MC but not so much the DBQ or FRQ… I’m pretty good at BSing essays on minimum knowledge on in-class exams, but I don’t know if my abilities will carry over to the actual APUSH exam. On that note, how specific does your outside knowledge of the essay prompt topic have to be?

Thanks in advance for your advice and have a wonderful day!

I don’t teach AP, but wasn’t the exam on May 8??

My test date is different…? It’s held on May 20th for my school.

You need to do more than watch videos. You need to practice test taking.

And practice the essays

I’m not watching the Crash Course videos with John Green – I’m reading through the REA’s Crash Course book for APUSH. My plan is to finish reading the book by tomorrow and practice tests (MC & essay questions) Mon + Tues. Tight schedule, I know, but I think I can pull it off if I keep at a steady pace.

I took the exam on May 8th and I used the crash course book. I found it really helpful since it is so concise and it gets right to the point. However because of this, I also supplemented it with 5 Steps to a 5 book. As long as you are using something else alongside of it, you should be fine! One of my biggest regrets is focusing too much on the crash course book because you need a lot of outside information for the DBQ, LEQ, etc.

Thank you so much for the input! I have the Barron’s APUSH book, which I plan on skimming after reading CC (I’ll look at my weaknesses and whatnot) and will also be watching Adam Norris’s youtube videos, so I really hope that it’s enough :-S

@schoolishell That sounds good! For the exam, you can try to make outlines for potential DBQ/LEQ topics since in my opinion it was the hardest part of the exam. The Crash Course and the videos will most likely be enough for the multiple choice. As long as you budget your time between your resources, I think you’ll be fine!

WATCH ALL OF ADAM NORRIS’S VIDEOS THEY ARE LIFE!!!No seriously do it though. He went over every single ting in the AP curriculum and I’m 100% I passed and fairly confident I got a 5 because of him. I also bought REA and his was kind of useful. Use the reviews in the back of the native americans/african americns/court cases etc to help you. Just reading through rea alone will not gurantee you a 5. I found the material very vague and you need specifics for the dbq and outside historical info.
