Would CMU be considered a match or reach for me?

Okay, I figured I might as well make a chance thread.

I'm probably majoring in Computer Engineering or Computer Science, not sure which one yet.

I'm a rising senior. In public school.
Asian. Female. Resides in Pennsylvania.

GPA does not include freshman year because I transferred schools.
Freshman GPA was a 97, and the two schools used different GPA systems. I think it's stayed fairly consistent for 3 years, though.

GPA (W): 4.1 (not sure if weighted really even matters though)
GPA (UW): 3.95
Rank: 7/400ish

SAT: 2070 (Will be retaking in either Oct or Nov)
CR: 620
M: 800
W: 650
SAT II: (took these w/o preparing.. also retaking Physics & Math II in either Oct or Nov)
Lit: 660
Physics: 670
Math II: 700
ACT: 28 (retaking in September)
AP:
Euro: 4
Lang & Comp: 4

Senior Year Schedule
Chemistry
Wind Ensemble
AP Physics
AP Gov/Pol
AP Calculus AB
AP Literature and Composition

I pretty much took/am taking as many APs as would fit in my schedule. I dropped Spanish for my senior year to take AP Physics. My school doesn't allow sophomores to take any APs. My school doesn't offer Calc BC or else I would have rearranged my schedule to take it.

ExtraCurriculars:
- Marching Band (9-12)
- Concert Band (9-10)
- Wind Ensemble (11-12)
- Indoor Drumline (10-12)
- Indoor Track (10)
- Physics Olympics (11-12) won 1st place in an individual building event
- Student Chapter of People to People International (11-12)

high match

Well if you apply to CIT its a High Match/ Low Reach.
If you apply to SCS its a reach.

You have competitive stats for applying, but with a school as selective as CMU (especially SCS), I’d hesitate to call it a high “match”. You’re competitive, but once you get to that point its in the hands of your essays and the way you come across to admissions counselors.

ahh i read this and you’re stats are similar to mine: asian female in PA, same classes and grades, except you hit the amazing high of 800 in math  great job! Nice EC’s as well, especially People to People International

I think you’re stats are great. Just as the others have said, this is your time to take control of those essays and interviews, and really give them the full taste of your personality. Also, CMU is a school that does appreciate it when a student shows their interest by visiting the school (as I’ve read).

Since you’re in PA, you might want to consider staying for a night at CMU! I might do it myself as well.
Good Luck :)
