Would colleges take me seriously if...

...my common app essay was about how my teddy bear is what makes me content? No joke, that's what I want to write about.

If I could write it well without sounding too much like a little kid (which I know I'll be able to do), would it be a good topic? I feel like it would be super unique, just like me! My concern is that the colleges would think I'm viewing the essay as a joke.

Please don't make fun of me. Haha.

Oh. BTW, Northwestern is the most selective school I'll be applying to, most likely. I have GPA and ACT scores that qualify me to get in. I just want to know about the essay.

I was wondering the same thing. Not my teddy bear, but me and my sister play a “make-believe,” role-playing sort of game that little kids play. I was thinking if that would make me sound childish if I said “I am content playing this little kid roleplaying game. It is meaningful to me…” Sorry I didn’t answer your question. I had the same one :)

I mean I’m not expert about college essays as I’m trying to figure out to write about, but my guess would be yes. I’m assuming colleges seek someone who is more mature and writing about something childish isnt exactly mature.

That’s okay, I’m just relieved that you didn’t laugh in my face.
I bet if you worded it differently, yours would be fine. Shows your personality and whatnot

If you approach it in a really mature and sophisticated way, I would personally think it would not be immature or childish, it really depends on how you execute it. If you do choose this idea, it’s really risky since it’s kind of a make it break it kind of topic. If you don’t do it well, then it will make you look childish and immature.

This game making me content. I wouldn’t say it’s the game itself but it’s a good way to spend time with my sister, keep boredom away, be creative and escape from reality for a bit. If I use these reasons as why I’m content while playing this, would that be more mature than saying “Getting to pretend I’m a famous superstar is fun!”

Yes. That’s exactly what I was going to suggest but I didn’t know exactly how to put it. I think that would be a great topic.

I guess I’ll try to write it early and get some feedback on if it’s mature or not. For yours, maybe you could talk about why the teddy bear is special to you. Like, did your grandparents give it to you or something. Why does it make you content?

Something about it being the one constant in my life as it changes. Maybe?

That could be good. I’m just wondering about how to actually write the essay. My essays for school usually consist of: intro/thesis, argument 1, argument 2, argument 3, conclusion. I do a lot of fiction writing which is also really easy for me, but it’s mainly novels so writing a 500 word essay about myself will be a challenge.

I think it’s always hard to write about yourself. Maybe you could write the original as one of your school essays, then add some of the fiction-y style (without actually making it fiction). Maybe. I actually have the same problem; I don’t know how to start!
Good luck to you!
