i just got my scores back this morning for the may 5 sat....i'm a little bit confused. i got a 760 on cr, which i was not expecting at all (that cr was far easier than the act's). i'm signed up for the sat II's june 2nd, but i could retake the sat I and try to get a better score. would i be able to take the sat I a second time at the beginning of my senior year? ugh.....i'm confused.

Um. A 2360? Are you kidding? Of COURSE they'll take it. Check CollegeBoard for the middle 50% range for SATs for Harvard. You're well above.

why would harvard base their admissions on a single SAT score?

see, that's what i thought...until i went in to ask my counselor about it this morning...she gives me this evil eye and goes "you'll want to think about retaking it."

i know a single SAT score won't do it, but obviously there's a range of scores in which you're fairly likely to be accepted.

most counselors are stupid, don't listen to them

2360 is well over the avg in harvard's 25-75% of 2080-2370 , so applying with a 2360 puts you over 3/4 of the students accepted in terms of SAT scores so you're fine for the SAT I's

A 1560 is fine for Harvard... but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll get accepted.

You shouldn't retake it unless you are 100% confident that you can do better on the CR section!!

good enough for harvard = 2200

would they look significantly more favorably upon a 2400?

Why wouldn't they? I know tons of people who've gotten in with scores nearly 300 points lower than that.

But of course, a 2360 doesn't necessarily mean you'll get in.

commodore-

is there a difference between 2120 and 2160? no, and there isn't a difference in 2360 and 2400 either but by all means go ahead and retake it if you're sure you won't drop

would i be able to take it first thing senior year?
i'm pathetically behind in the whole admissions process; don't know what the timeline's supposed to be.

2100 is pretty much the Ivy League minimum for the average Joe (somebody who's not famous). As long as you get a 2100, they pretty much move on to other things (GPA, courseload, EC's).

PS: taking the SAT again after getting a 2300+ is going to look bad. You could be using those 4 hours to do something more productive, like volunteer work.

Your guidance counselor is nuts...she's probably just bitter that she ended up as a guidance counselor at a high school.

commodore if i were you i'd rather concentrate on EC's during the summer rather than preparing for the SAT's (well, that's unless you don't need any prep for the SAT's)

either way, october and november tests both work i believe

If you applied to Harvard with a 2360, admissions would probably make fun of you for hours and hours, and then send you a cruel note mocking your extremely low score.

NOT!!!

That's an excellent score. Re-take it next year if you want, but Harvard isn't going to accept someone with a 2380 over you simply because they scored higher... Your ECs and volunteer work matter much more.

my counselor mentioned something about having a shot at being a "presidential scholar" if i did better. know anything about that?

(ambryllien) "Um. A 2360? Are you kidding? Of COURSE they'll take it. Check CollegeBoard for the middle 50% range for SATs for Harvard. You're well above."
(sry. not sure how to quote 'properly')

where can you see these SAT ranges for different universities?

-scratch that... found it-

Is it only a title? Do you get anything like scholarship? If not how important is that title, it seems that a lot of stress for nothing.

Presidential Scholar is where they take the top 20 or so students in your state based on ACT or SAT scores and have them complete a series of essays about why they would be the most qualified to receive the honor of being named a Presidential Scholar

Each state ends up selecting one student, and all of the scholars are then invited to the White House to meet the President and do other random things

At least that's always been my understanding of the program

I'm hoping my 36 ACT or 2360 SAT will qualify me....

hey, that's what I got :)
