Maybe not Harvard specifically, but I know that with Princeton the 2400 acceptance rate is approximately 45%, while the 2300-2400 range acceptance is around 26%. That’s a pretty significant difference.

Also, regarding your 2 scenarios, 1st of all there’s score choice, and second of all not all composite scores are equal. The OP’s CR score was a 760, and while this is by no means a bad score, generally speaking Harvard’s most competitive applicants have CR scores of 800 (while not necessarily having perfect Math scores…Go to the Harvard decisions thread and you’ll quickly see what I mean). If his scores by section were 790/790/780, then retaking the SAT would probably not be reasonable.

And yes, I am aware that OP made Harvard, and by no means did I suggest a 2360 would hurt his chances; rather, his SAT score probably significantly increased his chances. But at the same time, he probably didn’t get the boost that an applicant with a 2400 or even an applicant with a 2360 (760 Math) got. I am suggesting that overall, the higher the SAT score, the lower GPA/subjective factors can be in order to gain admissions, differentiating between scores even in the 2300s. The fact is when it comes to a school like Harvard, admission is so competitive that every minute factor for an unhooked applicant can be the difference between a WL and an acceptance.
