Would I like Temple although I'm not exactly a city person?

Hi all-
I have a big dilemma. I was recently wait listed at my number one school, university of delaware, and I need to put down a deposit on another school before I find out from them (they don't tell you until after May 1st, when all deposits are due)

I have been accepted to a wide variety of schools, but the only three that I am considering besides UDel are Temple, West Chester, and UConn.

When I do the pros and cons of each, the only con about Temple is the city. I live about 40 minutes from the city in a really really nice suburban area. I feel like if I go to Temple I will have a really hard time adjusting to the city setting. I really enjoy center city, but Temple isn't in center city. Broad street scares the hell out of me.

What I was wondering was, do you think that I could easily adjust to the surrounding settings if I'm not a city person? I absolutely LOVE the campus and the opportunities that Temple has to offer. I also like that it could be relatively easy to find an internship since I am right in the city, whereas west chester isn't really, and UConn is in the middle of nowhere. (BTW money isn't a deciding factor in this, I recieved a small amount of money and financial aid from UConn to make it reasonable, west chester is a great price for in state, and temple gave me a little financial aid)

Help!!!

Honestly, if Broad St scares the hell out of you, maybe Temple is too urban for you. It’s a great school with a great campus that is very well lit and patrolled. However, you will see the homeless, the mentally unstable and drug users on and around campus; police sirens day and night; I guarantee you’ll see cops chasing someone either on foot or by bike or car or helicopter. But, the students are street smart and stick together and if you are smart you will be fine. I would not want to see you scared for 4 years, so visit the campus day and night. Stay over with a friend if you know someone there. You may then get more comfortable. If not, go elsewhere BUT…
Many of these things go on at your other choices. I live near U of D. They frequently have rapes and other assaults. It’s still not smart to walk by yourself in Newark. OR…
West Chester, also known to have rapes and stick ups by armed robbers. Don’t walk any of these campuses by yourself, especially at night.

West Chester may be out here in Chester County, but it’s still possible to get a great internship. Just apply yourself, use the advisors, learn how to prepare for an interview, do mock interviews and, most importantly, keep your grades up!

Good luck…don’t know your major, but if Temple is the best school for it, check it out. But if you’re really that bothered by the city that it actually scares you, not that you just like suburbia better, maybe it’s not for you.

Thank you for the great advice! And I honestly think I probably would have been happier at West Chester since the outside of Temple scares me a lot. Even though I absolutely LOVED the academics they had to offer, I don’t think I would be happy living somewhere where I am scared a lot. But I actually got accepted early off of the waitlist to UD, so I don’t have a dilemma anymore! haha

Temple’s neighborhood might not be what you’re used to, but it’s really not that scary. It’s urban working poor families. It’s not the ghetto. Sometimes in life it’s good for you to step outside your comfort zone, and Temple is a safe way to do that. BUT, I am so happy that you got into your first choice! Just saying it would not have been the end of the world going to Temple.
