I'm a junior in high school and my high school semester grades were released.

Pre Calculus Honors: B
AP Biology: A
English 3 H: B+
AP Computer Science: C
Spanish 4: A
US History: A
Service: A

Would I not be able to get into the Ivies because of the C? My counselor said that it's ok if I get a B or A next semester. Is she right? I've been a straight A student for freshman and sophomore year (mostly), and I really struggled with AP Computer Science a lot (just couldn't get the thinking process). Also, since I'm planning on applying as a pre med major, would the C affect me getting into an Ivy like UPenn?
Thank you everybody for responding!

I don’t think you should be worried.

a C grade for the year might hurt you a bit, but i agree with your counselor; if you do well for the rest of the year, you should be fine. obviously with the ivies it’s impossible to predict what they’ll think of something and whether it’ll hurt your chances of getting in, but i don’t think a mediocre grade in one class while you excel in the rest of them will harm you.

also, try not to freak out too much about the ivies; you can do everything right and they still might reject you. you might be mentioning just them on this post b/c they’re the only ones you’re concerned about, but if that’s not the case i would advise you to look past brand names and look for colleges that appeal to you personally.

I see a very compelling essay in your future about what the experience of getting a C in computer science taught a straight-A student.

dude, you’re wasting your time. one look at those grades and you’re outta there. just saying. if you have more to offer than that, i’d suggest heavier emphasis on extracurriculars and sports or whatever. but don’t think those grades won’t make a huge impact. you’re competing with a couple hundred thousand other kids with weighted 4.0’s, here. don’t forget.

The grades are already there. All you can do is to concentrate on Computer Science, which has hurt you in some degrees. If you can show improvement, it’ll be okay. Just try not to panic and focus on your study. I’m sure you’ll be fine. ;D

Will you still be accepted? When were you ever accepted?

Those information you gave are vague as hell.
