Would it be a huge mistake to decline admission to the honors college?

I was accepted into the honors college at OSU but does it really make that big of a difference? I am mainly concerned because I don’t like the dorms assigned to the honors college students which I know may seem silly but then again I don’t really know how much the honors college will actually do for me. From my understanding, I think I would mainly benefit from the opportunity to choose my classes early. If you have any advice or input about whether or not it would be a huge mistake to say no to the honors program, please share! Thank you in advance!

Weigh the pros and cons (by your standards) and see what you think. Only you know what’s right for you. Priority scheduling is a HUGE plus, but if you’re coming in with a bunch of GECs satisfied, it may not matter much. I wouldn’t let a dorm sway my decision, though.

Priority scheduling is only one perk. Another important one is the smaller classes when you choose the honors ones. In my four years as an honors student (albeit many years ago) I only took one class for general education requirements that was over 30 people. You also get the benefit of the Honors House as a resource and study space. I lived in Taylor Tower back when it was all four-person rooms, and I liked it because the students tended to be quieter and more respectful than other dorms during the finals time, even though it was a packed dorm (it was the only honors dorm at the time).

Priority scheduling is a huge perk. Honors is worth it for that alone.
But having small classes with the best professors instead of TAs, a community of peers on a huge campus, those are not to be discounted either.

I declined my honors offer and I do not regret it. Remember that you can always decide to do it later on if you want to! It’s truly up to you. Do what feels right!
