Would it be a waste of time to do Yale EA?

Hiya! I was wondering about my chances at getting into Columbia, Yale, Dartmouth, UPenn, Boston U, Wake Forest, Duke, and/or UVA.... My stats:

Name: Nicole
State: Georgia

High School: one of the top public schools in the state
Course Load: most rigorous
Class Rank: 5/480 at the moment
GPA: uw3.95, w4.47

SAT: taken twice, 2140 and then 2290 (780m, 730cr, 780w)
SATII: math II 770; us history 710; physics 670
AP: sophmore- Chem (3); junior- Calc BC (5), US History (5), Spanish (4), Physics C (4); senior- Literature, Government, Economics, European History, Pyschology, Physics B

Extra Cirriculars:
+National Honor Society 11, 12 (treasurer, exec board): We run one major event per month (meaning 300-600 in attendance), coordinate the community service reach involved with the club (I personally coordinate our work with the local YMCA), and seek to change the environment of the school for the better (we run the recycling for the school and are responsible for the annual wordsearch, waffle wednesdays, backwards day, etc).
+Drama: Lighting/Sound Crew 9, 10, 11, 12 (Head of Tech Crew in 9 and 10)
+Volunteering at the YMCA 11, 12
+Foreign Language Club 9, 10, 11, 12
+Key Club 11, 12
+Renaissance Honor Society 11, 12 (board member): We do the honor roll, honor night, and the honor festival before Spring Break.
+Spanish Honor Society 11, 12: nominal
+Thespian Honor Society 10, 11, 12: nominal
+Math Honor Society 10, 11, 12: nominal
+Girl Scouts 9 (Silver Award)
+Odyssey of the Mind 9 (1st in State, 27th in World)

I have some other awards, but they're a bit dull (academic stuff), so I won't bother listing them for you all. I'd say my top interests/hobbies are math, reading, writing, cooking, theater, and travel. I recently sumbitted a poem I wrote to a few literary magazines... hopefully it gets picked up somewhere.

Intended Major: Mathematics

I can no doubt write a killer essay, but are my tests/extracirriculars good enough? Also, should I retake the SAT or SATII in October? I plan on applying for early admissions at Columbia or Yale, probably Columbia. Would I have a shot at Yale EA?

Thanks!!

Anyone have any thoughts? It would really help me out.

I’d say you should go for it. However, it doesn’;t make any sense you’d want to do math. You have all these theater things, and they’re VERY standard activities.

nicole5178 noooooooooo!
Columbia > Yale
(c’mon, of course you have a chance. I read your “Why Columbia” response on the other thread - simply beautiful. I feel the same way about math, but I’m a physics guy. So more applied math than pure. But, since you can write killer essays, in Ivy League admissions, many times that’s the only way to separate yourself from all the other overachievers)

Not a waste of time. Why…?

You’re very qualified, go for it.

apply to HYP but dont be surprised if you get rejected

wait i love how you want to major in math but you got a 3 on the Calc BC test
i think you have as good a chance as anyone else
those great SAT scores make up for your non-4.0 GPA
just have good recs and essays

<3 ya.

To Techy223: LoL, and thank you. Are you attending Columbia right now, or just a fan?

To Oprah!: A 5 on the Calc BC. I think you misread.

I like Yale and Columbia almost equally, but I think realistically, if I applied to Columbia early, I’d have a better chance of acceptance than if I applied to Yale early. I’m leaning toward Columbia over Yale at the moment, I think…

Could someone chance me for:
Columbia EA
Yale
Dartmouth
UPenn
BostonU
Wake Forest
Duke
UVA

Thanks to those who reply!! I’m really confused and nervous about college selection (obviously), and you all are really helping me.

Columbia, in general, is just as hard to get into as Yale. Columbia College (minus engineering and the school of general studies) had an acceptance rate of around 8.7%.

Columbia doesn’t have EA girrlllll

They definitely have early admissions at Columbia…

Anyone else want to chance me, please?

Columbia is binding Early Decision (ED)…

Columbia ED - Low Reach
Yale - High Reach (Crapshoot)
Dartmouth - Low Reach
UPenn - Reach
BostonU - Safety
Wake Forest - Low Match/Safety
Duke - Reach
UVA - Match

Judging from the comments you have made regarding your writing ability, I think you will stand a very good chance at Columbia ED. However, were you to apply Regular Decision, I think you might actually be denied admission. You’re one of those people who is teetering on the yes/no boundary to such an extent that you will benefit enormously from applying ED.

On a side note: Can you explain why you’re taking Physics B in your senior year despite having taken Physics C as a junior? Perhaps you made a typo?

The Physics B and Physics C dilemma: I took H Physics in the Fall, AP Physics C in the Spring of Junior year because I was in AP Calc BC and C is the calc-based class. My H Physics teacher wanted me to take Physics B with him, though, and convinced me that Physics B has entirely different subject matter and would in no way reflect bad on my app if I took it after C.

I’ve already taken a bio, two chems, and two physics, but I want to take science in my senior year. Choosing between H Chem II (even though I already took AP Chem) and AP Physics B, I chose physics because it has more to do with math. I plan on majoring in pure math, though, not applied.

Do you think I should not take Physics B? Thanks for chancing me!!

Well, if that’s your situation, then I suppose it’s an understandable circumstance. However, if your school offers a higher level math course (for instance, mine offers multivariable calculus and differential equations as higher courses), then I would advise you to attempt those. If not, then I guess Physics B is enough of a variation from C that colleges may not mind; let me tell you though, you WILL be incredibly bored lol. Whatever you choose to do, good luck!

Thanks, and for the record, I’m taking Multivariable next year as well, but I didn’t list it since it’s not “AP” and I only listed APs. Also taking gym.

ok yeah they do… it’s early decision though, not early action.

pwned

seriously go for it.

lol, im sure your name’s a factor in college admissions. why are you applying to yale for math? they’re pretty bad. you probably won’t get into Yale EA due to the lack of major awards. but columbia is possible.

Anyone else? Thanks to everyone who’s already answered!
