Would it be stupid of me to go to Riverside

i got into Irvine as bio major and chances are that I wont get into engineering during my freshman year

i got into riverside and santa barabara for engineering

i dont like SB

I want to be an electrical engineer

how much better, academically, is irvine than riverside
I dont really care about social life since college is for studying

since they are both top 100 schools in the US, would it matter when i apply for a job

ohwowwow180,

I graduated in EE at UCI and am now at UCLA for my MS/PhD. Going to UCR is not stupid by any means.

Once again, not coming in as an engineering major should NOT be a deciding factor for choosing schools. The ballpark of any random student changing their major at least once during their undergraduate years is 50%. As you can see, changing majors is not an issue.

In respect to your core courses like the fundamental courses in signal processing and circuits, there is no difference between the two schools. However, the companies that recruit from each school may differ. As an electrical engineer, you have an edge of recruitment at Broadcom since they particularly recruit from UCI and UCLA. However other companies like Boeing and Northrop Grumman recruit equally from both schools. And the list goes on…

What matters when you apply for a job is experience through projects, research experience, and internships. School doesn’t matter =].

Nothing wrong with that. If your heart’s into engineering, go to SB or R. You could try to stay at UCI, do some math/science courses, and then try to switch into engineering. However, it’s not guaranteed and not worth it if you happen to hate being a bio major. Give SB a shot too :P

Nothing wrong with UCR at all, go for it by all means. Riverside isn’t the best UC but the UC system itself is a pretty good system overall…
