take only 13 units of classes for the first semester?
Should I try to add in a couple more units or do med schools not look at numbers of units taken?

I can only tell you what pre med advisor told my son. He ended up with only 12 hrs. first semester after dropping a class. Advisor said it really didn't make any difference as long as grades were good and you carried a little more the next semester. In order to graduate on time at son's school one must average 15 hrs./semester. Of course may take longer for double major, etc. My son took a history class this summer to "make up" that 3 hours.

There will be plenty of time to make up any light semester loads taken early in college. Summer classes, correspondence/reader courses through your home institution, or simply taking a slightly heavier load at some point in the future are all viable options.

I have not heard of admissions committees placing particular weight on course load (unless you do particularly poor - then they might notice).
