I am currently in my first semester at saddleback community college. I hope to transfer to UCI in two years, and I plan on becoming a certified public accountant after college. I was wondering if majoring in Business economics would allow me to take the cpa exam, or if I would still have to take additional accounting courses. I would like to minor in accounting, but I heard it's really competitive to get in it. If I am required to take additional accounting courses, would I still be allowed to take the same accounting courses as I would with the minor, but without actually being accepted into the minor, or would they not let me do that?

You need to either take accounting courses on the side at CC while you are at UCI (alot of places offer online courses, 24 units can be finished in no time) or get into the accounting minor. Business Econ won’t allow you to take the accounting courses at uci. Only the lower-div ones but the rest aren’t open to non-minor/business admin major.

I would just start taking accounting classes right now at ur CC. Just take one every semester and you will be at 24 units before you even transfer lol. Make sure they are CPA eligible though.

Thanks a lot for the reply! So that basically means that majoring in business economics is practically unnecessary to sit for the CPA exam? I would major in accounting, but none of the UCs actually have an accounting major. I heard somewhere that business economics actually does have accounting courses in it, is that true?

At UCLA bizecon gives you access to accounting classes. At UCI biz econ is different. It is just economics with one accounting class and few more UD electives. I would just try CSUF if you are so interested in accounting. I heard their program is really good.

How about the economics and accounting major at UCSB? Would that major fulfill the CPA exam requirements, or would I still have to take additional accounting courses? I just don’t really want to go to a calstate if I can go to a UC

The accounting minor at UCI isn’t too competitive, average admitted GPA was a 3.6 last year, according to an advisor. If 3.6 isn’t around your ballpark, then as others have suggested, I would take classes at the local CC. Best of luck to you.

Yes UCSB would fulfill it. I think at Berkeley you can get into the accounting classes if they don’t fill or take it in the summer when its open to everyone. UCSD has an accounting minor now also.

I am in the accounting minor at UCI also if you have any more questions about the program.
