Would NYU be worth the debt?

I'd need to take out about a 40k-45k loan per year (unless things change next year) in order to afford it (out of state), is it worth it for me to do that? I'd need to do the same at UC Berkeley but at my state school I wouldn't need a loan. I plan on going to either law school or med school after undergrad (quite the extremes I know, but I haven't decided!) but then again I've always wanted to go out of state for undergrad.

NYU is pretty bad when it comes to the sciences and things like pre-med. Berkeley is obviously far superior for pre-med if we’re just talking about quality of program, but the competition and rigor makes things very difficult and you’ll have to work your butt off to do well. My pre-med friends who visited Berkeley said that the students they met were bitter about the work that they had to do and were told to go to UCSD if they wanted to do pre-med.

Don’t know too much about pre-law tracks, but NYU’s Law school is top tier. However, this might even make it more difficult to get into NYU Law and a good law school doesn’t mean a good pre-law program for undergrads. Definitely do some research on whether or not anything involving the law school is offered to undergrads, and whether or not it’s worth doing.

Also, the fact that you’re deciding between law school or med school at this point means that you probably have no real interest in either fields and are looking for prestige/money. Just go to the school you like more, because it’s very likely your “interests” will change.

I have been interested in bio/chem though and I’ve taken a lot of the health science tech classes at my high school. At the same time I’ve enjoyed a lot of the humanities/socratic seminars I’ve participated in, in high school. So I do have genuine interest in the fields. But I think I’ll sleep on it and take your advice about choosing which of the colleges I’ll end up liking more! I might not take a huge loan at this point after researching, just to save up some money for whatever route I end up taking in terms of grad school.

No. It is nowhere near worth it, hands down, no contest. It would actually be stupid of you to take out so much debt.

Additionally, YOU can’t even take out that much debt. You would need to find a co-signer with a high income and practically perfect credit to qualify for loans like that. And, what happens if one year because you’ve taken out such an absurd amount of loans that the bank won’t give you any more loans? Then you’re forced having to drop out.

And, law school and medical school will force you to take out even more in loans. If you went to either NYU or UCB you would be drowning in debt - there’s absolutely no reasonable way to pay off that much debt. And you cannot declare bankruptcy on your loans, you have to pay them off.

If you choose NYU or Berkeley, I GUARANTEE you will be miserable and poor after you graduate.

No school is worth that much debt. Go to your state school. Really.

I have one word for you: No.

$200,000 is a mortgage sized debt. Do you want one before you even buy a house?

no, not even Ivey Leagues worth it

ABSOLUTELY NOT, no undergraduate school is worth that amount of debt.
