Same as title. If I only take the ACT and got a really good score, would it hurt if I don't take the SAT? I kinda hate the SAT... And I'm aiming for a top college. Just in addition, I'm an international from china... If that would matter. Would somebody please give me some suggestions?

If you want to go to a college in one of the orange states you should take the SAT. If in one of the blue states ACT only is fine.

most colleges specifically state on their admissions site that they accept either the SAT or the ACT, very few if any require both.

as far as an insider’s perspective on whether having both scores boosts your chances, i can’t help you there, sorry.

Most colleges accept either/or. You can get in with only the ACT.

well california is considered a SAT state, however, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo prefers the ACT, so there will be exceptions.

unless I’m mistaken, that map refers to what high school juniors in those states usually take, not what colleges prefer.

there aren’t many colleges that only accept one and not another. I heard today that Georgetown apparently doesn’t like the ACT? but even the top ones usually take either or without bias.

Last year, UPenn accepted 17% of students who ONLY submitted the ACT. Granted, they probably had high enough scores and only sent if they were good.

ACT only is fine, although some of the elite colleges may still require 2 or 3 SAT subject tests…Look at their admissions websites for more details. FWIW, D is awaiting her first ACT results and probably will retake in June UNLESS she posts a big score now…

By contrast, I have seen some students score really high on the ACT, and then BOMB the SAT ( ACT=35 vs SAT=2070) in comparison. Some of the schools like Georgetown REQUIRE that all scores be submitted, so be careful.

Take some good practice tests and don’t be cajoled into spending the money for BOTH tests if you don’t need to do so.
