I’m applying to Princeton and also for an ROTC scholarship. On the scholarship, you must list schools you are considering, in order. Right now, Princeton is 1 on my list. I plan to submit the scholarship application for review early next week, and it would be helpful to remove Princeton if I’m not accepted.
If I called admissions tomorrow, would they at least notify me if I was denied or deferred? Do admissions offices ever do this?
I’m sure you’re not the first ROTC applicant who has applied to an ED/EA school. Obviously that has to be your first choice – but by the time of submission, the applicant may have already been rejected. I’d advise you to ask how this contingency is dealt with – while also asking PTon concurrently. I would suspect that if the 1st choice school rejects you in the EA/ED timeframe, you can amend your scholarship app under those circumstances.
I spoke with a friend who used to be in charge of NROTC at Oregon State a few years ago & he said that there can be communications between the admissions office & NROTC selection board – so it’s possible that before decisions on either end are made, the offices talk to each other. An admissions rep from Northwestern recently told me the same thing – because if you are a strong candidate & also indicate that you are applying for ROTC, the admissions office will want to know about the status of your scholarship because (1) they want to take ROTC applicants that their school’s ROTC wants (kinda like taking athletes, but more academically rigorous) & (2) you could be a “free” student to them who will contribute to the school & not cost them anything (in terms of FA). My son applied ED to Duke & the NROTC officer from Duke contacted him last week after his local interviews/boards in Calif & told him to email the admissions office (cc’ing her) to let them know he was pursuing ROTC at Duke. Who knows what will happen – ED decision is tomorrow, NROTC not til Feb… these are nerve-wracking times!
