Would this course load be too much and too difficult?

Hello all,

I’m currently a freshman community college student enrolled at a Texas community college, and I’m currently looking for some advice and tips for my second semester of college. Right now I’m finishing up 12 hours with classes being placed on two days of the week, and I’m not failing any of them. However, I really want to have a solid foundation of courses when the time to apply for transfer admissions rolls in, so I’m planning on taking 17 hours which is 5 courses. I wanted some insight since I want to transfer to an in-state university for engineering.

Here’s what I’m planning to take:

MATH 2413 - Calculus I, this will be an online course.
CHEM 1311 - General Chemistry I
ENGL 2322 - British Literature I
HIST 1302 - U.S. History 2
PSYC 2301 - Introduction to Psychology

So, I will be taking Calculus I online and taking my other classes in person. I don’t work or party, and I will be having the online course throughout the week and the other courses Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.

Do you guys think this is very doable? I know it’s going to be based on factors such as the rigor of professors, but I’m questioning myself on this schedule. Thanks!

That schedule sounds very normal. Calculus I and Gen Chem I will likely be the most challenging but they’re often taken together in the first couple of semesters of most STEM majors so it’s certainly manageable. British Lit + History will likely be reading and writing intensive, so also keep that in mind.

I once did five classes in a semester and it was fine. I took all intensive writing classes, but I wasnt a partier either, so it was okay. Just be sure to get any extra help if you need it, right from the start. Falling behind with some of those classes wouldn’t be good.

Thanks for the replies folks.

The Calculus I and Literature courses concern me since I didn’t take Calculus in high school and I struggled with my last semester of English in high school. I’m just now being able to enroll in Calculus and I had PreAP Precalculus and the class I’m currently in right now is basically the same stuff I learned in high school + some new stuff I never learned. In my last semester of high school, I had a brutal dual credit professor but managed to cling with a C…

Let me tell you right now not to take British Literature if you want to be an engineer (unless you have some love for Brit lit). I did that cluelessly and there is much reading and writing. Take the lowest level Freshman English Composition that would transfer to the State Unis. Being able to write is important, but being able to analyze and read Chaucer in Middle English is not.

According to UT-Austin’s transfer course sheet, they want a semester of this course.

I guess I could just drop it and take an alternative course in order to lighten the load.

Update: decided to take GOVT 2305. Should be a bit easier, and I’ve decided to set off English for another semester.

Are you sure you want to calc 1 on line and not face-to-face? Maybe intro to psych might be easier on line.

Main reason why I’m taking Calculus I online is because of my prerequisites.
