I want to write about an experience I had during my lab internship. A researcher and I were trying to give a rat acupuncture, but none of the rat holders were working (they were the wrong sizes).

I noticed that my water bottle was about the same size as the rat, so I created a rat holder using the water bottle. I made vents and everything. However, I don't know whether this was entirely "ethical," because it wasn't an approved rat holder.

I don't want to get on the wrong side of an admissions officer.

In my opinion, it doesn’t sound like you transgressed any ethical or moral boundaries. However, I do not study science, so I am not really sure what is accepted and what isn’t in the scientific world.

It sounds good to me and shows how you used your creativity to improvise.

But then again, someone might see this as mistreatment of animals or something.

You never know what you’re going to get with something controversial. You might anger someone and ruin your chances of admission. On the other hand, you might impress someone and boost your chances of admission.

You should be VERY cautious about this, I think. You’re more likely to find a lot more animal rights activists who would find your essay topic appalling at LACs than at the science-mathematics oriented universities.

But of course this is purely anecdotal with zero basis in fact, so take it for what you will.

Interesting, maybe think about the ethical question and write about that (rather than just write about the research). Am sure that Admissions would like to see how you handled this type of situation. nice

thanks for the responses…

I think this topic is too controversial for me to write about.
