I have had trouble thinking of essay topics; I've never really had a huge conflict I had to work through. I do think, though, that I could write an excellent essay about looking for faith, trying to be Christian, and still never finding it. But is this too risky? And as far as the Common App goes, is it bad in general to do a "topic of your choice?"

What schools?

Hmm, yeah, it does partially depend on what school you're applying to. I did a "topic of my choice" and don't even exactly know what my topic exactly was, but the essay was damn good, lol.

thanks for the responses.

from the u of Miami to Yale, and everywhere in-between, i need my main common app essay..

i'm less concerned about whether the essay is germane than if admissions officers would be turned off by my unresolved search for faith. I probably wouldn't use it for Gerogetown though :)

...just so everyone knows, this isn't resolved...

Make sure it's honest (and hopefully not trite) and I don't think they'll be turned off at all.

Also, you don't have to write about conflicts in your life. I'm sure there are one or two events that are most memorable. You can write about them and what you learned from them.
