Okay, so I immigrated when I was 5 years old to a very, very small country from a much larger one. I’ve lived on this tiny island my whole life now, and I taught myself English through television and stuff like that. Would it make a decent topic or should I just write about my childhood love for Legos instead?
I can see a lot of pros and cons to each. Why not come up with a rough draft of each, and see which you prefer?
Oooh I would definitely write about how you taught yourself English and how you are part of an isolated small community and what you contribute to it. A childhood love of legos is nice but…childish :)) (couldn’t think of any other way to put it–but maybe your lego essay would be the most amazing thing ever written!)
Immigrating here
Between those 2, immigrating. The point of the essay is to reveal your personality and something that is unique about you, and to make them want you on campus. But even the immigration one requires more of a focus on recent events and the impact on you; what happened when you were 5 isn’t very interesting to them.
I vote for Legos. There are soooooooo many stduents who write about their immigrant experience. Though I do think you could make your essay interesting by discussing your tiny island and the world as seen through a TV.
Coming from someone who also immigrated from a small island country to the United States at the age of five, definitely write about your immigration experience. It’s more personal, touching and revealing of your personality and the experiences that shaped you into the person you are today.
Like @Lindagaf said, a lot of people write about their immigration experience so make sure it stands out.
I would write about your immigration experience. Teaching yourself English through television in an isolated environment sounds like it would be an interesting read. What I would do is draft both of them, like @bjkmom said, and see which one you prefer.
