WOULD YOU READ THIS AS GOOD NEWS or UNIMPORTANT?

THE FA office of one of the schools my son is interested in sent us a letter which we recieved yesterday saying they need our 07 estimated tax return. Do you think this is a good sign from this school and a bad sign from the other schools (3) that they are not looking for the estimated returns. OR

it is unimportant and thus the other schools have not contacted us about an estiated return???
very anxious

I'm surprised your schools didn't require this information by a certain date. All of the ones my daughter applied to requested that we send in **completed tax returns **by 2/15.

HUSBAND IS SELF_EMPLOYED. needing to complete a business farm form and normally they will just want the previous year tax return which we submitted.

Interesting, of the 5 we applied to, only one wanted BOTH the 2006 and 2007. As long as 2007 was complete, they didn't care about 2006.

I'm guessing that the one school would like an estimate to work from (which is probably a good sign at this point in the process) and the others are fine working off of the 2006 and the estimated 2007 PFS.
I wouldn't though read anything "bad" into the fact that the others haven't asked for it.

it could be that you forgot it in your pfs forms, and they needed it in order to decide how much aid they were willing to give, to your specifically or the average student.
i wouldnt get my hopes up, or down

I am reading the three that have not asked for the 07 estimated as a negative sign.
Although, i have two other children that are in BS and if I remember correctly, I am unsure, that they only wanted the prior year return and once they were admitted asked for the current year's return. I can't recall though.
thought someone could help

I would not say it's a bad sign. The schools I talked to said if the 2007's were not done to just send the 2006's. I guess I was not clear. I think the ones that didn't ask, simply are fine with using the estimated 2007 on the PFS and the 2006 taxes. For the one that wasnted the 2007, they obviously want estimated tax returns in addition to the PFS, so for THAT school, it's probably a good sign,(but it doesn't mean it's bad for the others). Did that make any more sense?

Same here. A school called my son's english teacher/placement counselor (also wrote the school recommendation) the other day. Ok, is that good or bad? Clearly he's not in the rejection pile but why did they need to call her? Was there a red flag in a recommendation? Or have they moved on the FA and this school actually says that FA is competitive among those with need, are they trying to see who the best candidates are to give more $$ to? Several students from our school applied, did they ask about all of them or just my son?
Why hasn't any other school called? Is he in the reject pile at them?
I called around to see when schools would be mailing things, only one seemed to know who I was....ut-oh.....
Yes, we are anxious and any little thing sets me off too. :) LOL

Our school does not required completed 2007's until 4/15 (but that is for returning students). The rest of the fa materials were due to the school by 2/1.

Only one of the schs to which D applied required estimated 2007 taxes. Even if the finaid deadline is 2/1, they don't/can't read all the apps at the same tirme and it's fairly common to send letters alerting parents to missing material.

Yeah, my mom is self employed and relies on other people's information to complete her tax information, so all the schools let us send in our 2006 forms and estimate 2007.

The fact that one school asked for tax information and others didn't may or may not be a good sign.

It may be that the school asking is "need sensitive" in its admissions process and therefore is trying to determine if the student and need match up well, while the other schools may admit regardless of need and do the FA decision later in the process (giving $0 offers to those who pass the admissions but are not deemed to be high enough on the list to warrant aid).

The need sensitive schools don't make $0 offers, but tend to be more generous with their aid to those they accept.

And of course the best funded schools (Andover, Exeter, etc) fully fund their accepted students, so of course, they would need your tax info just as a matter of processing once they make their decision.

The fact that this one school asked means that they didn't reject the application out of hand, but no guarantees of anything beyond that for most schools.
