790 Math II is in the 89th percentile. That means you are behind 11% of high school students. Goddamit, 89th percentile is 1920 on the SAT, so if you would retake a 1920 on the SAT I, would you also retake a 790 on the SAT subject test math II?

I wouldn’t.

No reason too. Study for and take a different subject test to boost your resume

Do people ask questions like this just to give folks the opportunity to ooh and ahh over the near perfect subject test score? Just wondering.

^
Of course.

I’ll oblige.

Ooh! Aah!

Nope. Score is fine. Move along.

I’d retake SAT I if I got 1920, but definitely not SATII with a 790.

I wouldn’t think so. 790 on the Math II subject test isn’t a really good score at all considering that over 10 percent of the people that take the test get a perfect score. The people that ask these questions probably want to go to selective colleges that consistently reject valedictorians (over 99th percentile), let alone the 89th percentile (which is what 790 on the SAT Math II puts you into).

790 is at the 89%ile
800 can be anywhere from 90-99%ile.

Still, I probably wouldn’t retake. There are better ways of showcasing your mathematical ability than retaking for an 800 on Math II.

SAT Math 2 has a self-selection bias that isn’t as prominent in the SAT I. People generally don’t take subject tests in the first place unless they plan on applying to competitive schools, and if they are taking subject tests, they have an opportunity to choose subjects that showcase their strongest talents, so they will only choose to take Math 2 if they feel that they will do well on it.

For those reasons, I don’t think 89th percentile Math 2 and 89th percentile SAT are properly comparable. Would you retake a 95th percentile MCAT score just because you would retake a 95th percentile SAT?

OP should not retake, there are better things to do than stress over your 790 Math 2 score. Even if they aren’t college related. Take a walk, go camping, play with your dog, go out with your girl (or guy, I don’t know your gender or preferences, sorry).

Have fun, OP.

It depends on your specific aspirations. If you’re applying as some kind of math/science genius to the top schools, a 790 might look a little strange. If not, it’s a fantastic score.

790 is 81%tile
800 is 85%tile

Math Level 2 will not make you stand out, no matter how well you do.
Take Math Level 1

Some poor innocent reader is going to take that advice seriously.

Heck no. I didn’t even retake either of my 730s (though those weren’t in Math II).

Because colleges don’t see how many questions a student actually gets wrong on the SAT Subject Test (-6 on the SAT Math II is still an 800), there is not a big difference between a 790 and 800 because there is no difference between a -6 800 and a -0 800.

I remember reading somewhere about an MIT admissions officer talking about how, after an SAT subject score surpasses a ~750 point benchmark, they get the idea - that you’ve proven proficiency/competency in said subject - and move on to more important things.

That said, Math 2 is different since even an 800 is a notch below 80th percentile; 800s are incredibly common at most top schools. If you’re applying as a STEM major (or even a more quantitative social science, like economics or finance), retaking it may not be a bad idea. But seriously, if it comes at the cost of doing more important stuff, don’t bother.
