Retake Math II (Considering I got a 790)?

I got a 790 on my Math II this last time around. I got a 770 the time before. I am certain I could get an 800 if I took it again...

The issue is, I get all the questions right, but I don't get through all of them, but I am worried that college admissions officers from top colleges (i.e. Ivy League) will see my 790 as a sign of a week math student (come one: it's the 86th percentile!).

Then again, I don't want to come off as a student who takes these tests over and over...

Anyways, thoughts?

Um…wow…

I think taking the test again to score 800 from 790 is pretty much wasting of time.

From what I read, colleges view 790 as 800…just like they view 2300 SAT score as 2400.

Of course, 800 will be nice to see but there is no big difference between student with 790

and another with 800.

I scored 790 on June SAT Chem test, and I was very furious with myself just like you.

I contacted my college counselor in admission company, and he said that colleges regard

790 as 800.

If I were you, I would take another subject test…

For me though, the greater concern is the fact that a 790 is only at the 86th percentile on Math II. Whereas on a test such as SAT Chemistry, the 790 is still a high percentile (high 90’s), the Math II exam is an exception since an 800 is at the 87th percentile and the 790 at the 86th. I don’t want to come across as relatively “dumb” in math, but I do understand that the difference between a 790 and 800 seems, on the surface, negligible.

I scored an 800 and it put me at the 86th percentile…mostly because the other 13 or 14% also got perfect scores.

If I were you, I wouldn’t retake a 790. It’s a waste of time and money for 10 extra points.

Don’t do it, focus your time on improving your essays.

Okay… The question then… If I have two 800’s on other tests, should I even submit the 790?

How do colleges look at it if you retake a subject test. I took math level 2 with no preparation and scored a 710. I’ve been practicing though and I think I can get at least a 750 now (trying for the 800 though).
Is it reasonable to retake the test for 90 points?
I got a 720 on the math section of SAT1 and don’t want to retake the entire test just to get an 800 when I could focus on higher level math.
Would that balance out in an admissions standpoint?

(sorry for high jacking your thread, just thought it was a similar concern!)

Seriwe, yes, you should definitely submit it! There is not a single college that would look down upon a 790 Math II!

LunaandAberforth (nice name, though I really hope you like them separately and don’t ship them as some weird, creepy couple!), I’d say if the test is required for colleges you’re applying to, then you should retake it because you’ll be directly compared to all the other applicants. It probably won’t take that much effort to study a bit for it. If it’s not required, then it’s definitely reasonable to focus on more important things.

Thank you ameliab12! (and yes, I like them individually. That would be a strange couple. Hmmm… I smell a fanfic…)

Are you serious? SAT scores are only a small part of your application. An 800 over a 790 would only boost your application negligibly. Adcoms would rather you have used that time you spent studying to do more constructive activities.

Thanks for the thoughts!

Is 790 considered a bad score? Not just for Math II, but for any subject test? It’s not, right?

No, don’t retake it. Yes, do submit it. Don’t worry about percentile. Even a perfect is in the 80’s.

SAT Subject tests REALLY dont matter that much. If you have a decent score above 700, then it doesnt matter really if 1 applicant has a 750 and another has an 800. I think colleges would laugh at you for retaking a 790 subject test and may already do so for retaking a 770.
