Would you retake a 2300?

I was extremely discouraged the other day when one of my
closest friends told me that he would retake a 2300 on his Dec. SAT.
I don't know the breakdown of his score but is this normal?
Both of us are planning to apply to top IVY's next year, but
I would've been delighted with a 2300.

I don't understand. Do scores matter that much?

For some people who think they can improve, I don’t see a problem with this. Just because you would have been delighted with the score doesn’t mean he shouldn’t retake. Anyways a 2300 is obviously a great score that most people would be very happy with.

of course not -_-

How many times have you taken the sat before would be a large factor

It is not normal to retake a 2300. However, I know where he’s coming from. I retook a 35 on the ACT because I thought I could do better. I didn’t do better, but it was worth a try.
Don’t get discouraged. Many people, including myself, have a hard time accepting that they have given their best and that doesn’t equate to a perfect score.

I retook a 2320 and ended up w/ a 2400.

Well I ended up getting into Dartmouth ED on December 10th and got my 2400 on December 21st. Probably the first perfect SAT score that will never be seen by colleges. :(

Goodness, no.
I got a 2120 and felt like that was good enough to not retake. I felt that my score wasn’t going to be the thing to get me rejected by schools, and retaking it wasn’t worth the time, effort, and money just so I could have a slight chance of improving my scores which would only very slightly improve my chances of admission to colleges.
Turns out I did the right thing because I got accepted ED to Harvey Mudd.

Depending on the breakdown of the 2300, I might and I might not. There’s no reason to be discouraged, though.

well, if its only your first or second time, theres no harm in it…

If I got a 2300 the first time I took the SAT, I would retake but only if I thought I could get any higher. After the first time, I probably wouldn’t…

That depends on your friend and how well he thinks he can do. For me personally, I would retake since I’m sure I can do much better.

EDIT: This is only if I got 2300 first sitting. If it were second/third, I would reconsider it.

I am retaking a 2300. but that is mainly because of the breakdown:
770 CR
750 Math
780 Writing

since I didn’t really get an 800 in any subject, and I had two stupid mistakes in math, I think that I have room to improve

If he thinks he has a realistic room for improvement, it is completely rational. I would even argue that such behavior is normal, although by no means usual: most people will consider retaking if they have a reason to think they can do better, although not many people think they can do better than 2300.

Sure I would. A 2300 is a VERY “low” score…

It depends on the break down. I know someone with 700 CR, 800 M, 800 W. It definitely worth it for this person to retake.

didn’t you get a 2370, avid?

It really all depends on the breakdown scores.

If I got the 2300 on my first or second sitting and felt I could improve beyond that, I would DEFINITELY retake it. A 2300 is an AMAZING score by ANY college’s standard…but I’m someone who isn’t happy until I’m POSITIVE that I’ve given something my best shot.

I believe that 2300 is quite average by Harvard’s standards :)

If it was my first try I probably would go for the 2400. If it was at least my 2nd try, I wouldn’t. There is that presidential thing you can get if you score a 2400 though (so you will still be considered for that @AvidStudent).
