I’m a junior and i am thinking about applying to Brown under chemistry.
My stats:
Ethicity: Black
Rank:16/526
GPA: 3.86 UW 5.54 W
SAT: 790 CR 650 M 630 W (See the problem)
ECs: Football(2 yrs but broke my wrist), Track (1 year), Band (2 yrs), Quantum Mechanics Research (every summer since 7th grade), Debate (3 yrs and Captain), Mu Alha Theta, English Honor Society (treasurer), Science Honor Soceity
Awards: Numerous mostly debate at state and national level and Science awards at city level

So for brown should I retake the SAT or if I apply ED would i have a good shot at getting in?

For early decision, adcoms usually only look at test scores BEFORE senior year. If you really love Brown, then applying early would show them that you value them as your #1 choice.
I've also heard that any scores above 650 is competitive. Retaking to raise that writing score might be nice.
Good luck.

If you think you can do better (which i bet you can) I would retake it. It can't hurt. I don't know specifically whether or not your score would be competitive for Brown ED, but if you apply to other selective schools RD you might want to have a higher SAT.

I had a problem like this, high GPA ?low? SAT scores. I took the ACT and got a MUCH better score so try that route too if you have not. I think you have an excellent chance! Are you from the south, any more hooks?

It is not correct that only junior year scores are looked at for ED. The October exam is scored in time for ED.

Your CR score is excellent; I wouldn't sweat the writing one too much. It would be nice if you could get your math score up since you are considering chemistry -- I'm more concerned about that than the writing score. Look for the "xiggi method" in the SAT forum -- I'll bet with some focused studying you could raise your math score.

Only retake if you have the time to study and can still work on your ECs and school work.

I am from texas, but near sugarland. I think that it may be possible to pull close to a 750 on math SAT 2, which I hope might compensate for my weak math and i will probably take literature which i think i could get a 800, so with those would it make up for my low SAT 1s?

On a side note, I hear Brown is liberal and very much so, but that is unfortuante bc i am very conservative. For those who go to brown is it a place where ppl would demean others who have diffferent views?

To Dbate: it depends on what you mean by really conservative. College, especially Brown, is a place where you will come in contact with people from many different ethnicities, religions and sexualities. If by conservative you mean that you are "closed minded" and traditional and think that things need to fit a certain mold so to speak, then college in general is going to be a very rude awakening for you.

The whole point of liberalism is to be open to new ideas and whatnot. So if you do hold "traditional values" but are willing to hear the perspective of someone completely different and don't see your views as better than those of others you're fine and you'd probably fit in at college.

HOWEVER, if you're the type of conservative who thinks that any religion other than Christianity isn't worth caring about or other such nonsense than college will never be right for you.

I think in general there is nothing egregious about having a conservative outlook, but in general from experience, conservatives tend to be closed minded (not saying you necessarily) and because of that aren't willing to learn anything from their college classmates.

That's why I hate it when people complain that professors have a liberal bias. Well then what are they supposed to have? If everyone on a college campus was close mindedly conservative then no one would learn anything. The liberalism seen on a college campus is often the kind where people can openly talk about different viewpoints and maybe open their eyes to a ideology that they've never considered before.

Sorry for ranting. Hope that helped.

PS-I am not bashing conservative thought. But what I've noticed is that conservative-->closed minded-->horrible time in college. But if you're the type of conservative that is willing to look at your views objectively compared to those of others, then you're fine.

No, actually i have experienced all that before, I come from a part of texas that is very diverse. I live in the burbs of houston and there is about every religion, ideology, everything. I.e the largest place of worship near us is a gigantic and i mean gigantic can see from very far away Hindu temple. What i mean by bad liberal are the view that is actually close minded. Like I am Christian and deeply believe in that, but I also know about other religions and can debate evolution and all that. I guess i may be different from many other conservatives as i am conservative in the Christian sense i.e. show ppl love regardless of anything and i mean anything. But I don't like it when ppl hear conservative and think close minded like i dont know about other views that is really annoying.

Oh and about the Christian thing, realize that JESUS was kind and showed love to all, and I most certainly believe in that. That is what Christianity is. So really to see Christianity don't look at Christians, bc we aren't perfect, look to JESUS and you see the truth of Christianity.

oky i get your message about love and respect and the true meaning of christianity, and it's a good one, but if you go around talking about JESUS, people are going to get rather annoyed.

Well my atheist and other friends i tried to convert don't find it annoying, trust in really life it is much nicer, and i don't do it repeatedly i go in once and then respect their choice.

Also, saying "it's their choice" not to believe in that condescending way that implies that they are choosing to be ungodly simply for not believing in Christianity is incredibly arrogant. There are plenty of spiritual people who have found God who are not Christian and to have that "Christianity or nothing" attitude is very, very high and mighty.
