Would you skip Chem I and II and start off with Thermo your freshman year?

If you did well enough on the Chem AP, should you take it again in college before taking thermo?

You don’t really need Chem for Thermodynamics. I never took Chem 2 and I sucked at Chem 1 ( and didn’t do AP in high school), but I did ok in Thermo.

The short answer is “no” for chemistry.

Have you completed your physics/math requirements? You need to take the lower-division “heat, waves & optics” physics course and differential equations before you take thermo.

P.S.: Is New York that upside-down? :)

Depends on what the pre reqs are. For our thermo, the pre req was a Chem of materials class and the pre req to that class was Freshmen chem. Just look at the pre reqs and then decide if you want to.

It definitely depends on the school I think. My school requires chemical process analysis, two semesters of general chem, and two semesters of physics before you can take thermo.

Oh no, I’ve taken AP Chem and I did well enough on the AP to get credit. Hopefully, if I can get credit for at least Calc I through the AP, then I can take thermo. I’m just wondering if it’s a good idea to start off freshman year with thermo.

Sorry, I see the wording might’ve been a bit confusing before.

I know thermo’s hard, but would retaking chem help much? I mean I don’t want to work through 8 credit hours and write labs up again.

And haha, NY isn’t upside down, the world around us is.

Thanks for answering, everybody.

I don’t think chemistry helped any in Thermo. I was just lucky to get a very easy teacher for Thermo! It made no sense at all to me. :(

At my school, the math pre-req for MechE and ChemE thermo is Calc 2.
The pre-req for the BME Thermo (separate because the bme’s clogged up the other 2) is Calc 3.

So depending on your school, AP Calc might not cut it.

Check your school, its department for your major, and its chemistry department for recommendations on what to do about your AP credit.

Yes. Depends on the prereq. For us, it’s just general chemistry 1
I guess if you have done AP you can go straight to thermo. Not a problem without physics because you will be learning the same things over and over!
